MBAM not starting automatically in win7

Recommended Posts

1)I had a really old version of pro. I uninstalled old version and then installed new version (1.75.13000)... IT WILL NOT LOAD AND RUN AT STARTUP! It is NOT listed in msconfig/startup. But.....MBAM scheduler and service are both listed in services.msc  as "automatic" Help!

2) out of nowhere, the program starts a scan...the only thing I have listed for automatic is, updates (hourly)

win7 64

Did this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and once there, right-click on mbamgui.exe and choose Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and under Privilege Level uncheck Run this program as an administrator and then click on Apply and then OK.

Boy, I feel like a DUMMY... I was following the above procedure and decided to disable MBAM also. Did a rt.click to exit and noticed "start with windows" wasn't checked !!!

You might want to make a sticky on this for other DUMMY's like me. But at least I got a fast reply on my post...THANK YOU!

I am still having this issue though:

Please create an mbam-check log:

  • Download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double-click on mbam-check.exe to run it, it should then open a log file
  • Please do not copy and paste the entire contents of the log into your next post, instead please attach the log CheckResults.txt file which should now be located on your desktop to your next post

Please backup your Registry. Then remove these entries from the registry and restart the computer.

If you need help on how to remove them please let me know.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\appCompatFlags\Layers
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\appCompatFlags\Layers
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

Backup the Registry:
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
  • Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

I wanted to monitor MBAM a little more before messing with the registry. MBAM isn't starting scans just out of nowhere like i thought.....it is starting scanning right after it downloads a new data/definitions update. Should I still go ahead with above procedures or did I just set up the scheduler wrong??

Yes, you need to remove at least the entries there in the Registry for our program or it's not going to work properly.

Here is what you have.  Which runs a Flash Scan after every update (I actually don't use or recommend a flash update as if anything were found you'd need to do a Quick Scan to remove it anyways so just set a Quick Scan for the day)  If you're going to wake the computer every hour to do updates then that's not very conservative and why sleep the computer.  I'd recommend not setting that and initially you may want to see the tooltip about the update but after a while most users get tired of that and set it all to silent.  Then maybe once a week or so just double check that all is working as it should.

You also have  a Recover by 2 hours yet you have it set to every hour so it cannot recover as the time expands beyond the set time period.  Either turn it off or set it to a more reasonable setting as shown below.

Here is how I have mine set.  We only update so many times a day so for me there is no since in checking every hour and I'm not doing anything risky on my production box to warrant a need for immediate updates (no harm though if you want to do it).

Again, once you get used to it working then you may want to edit the schedule and remove the Show tooltip entry.

Don't forget to set a Quick Scan for at least once a week.  Some users run it once a day and again that's up to you but at least once a week should suffice for you unless you have a history of getting either infections or PUP entries.

yep...had "run flash scan after....." enabled. Well..  my bad. I've applied all fixes except registry, which I will. Program "seems" to be working fine now but I'll follow your advice. If I didn't, are you saying MBAM might miss a virus, etc rather then..... just something annoying happening? One more question ( I apologize...I know your busy. so no hurry) What would account for the bad registry entries ?? Bad install, etc. ???

Ron, I gotta tell you.... " X'lent customer service !!!", wish everybody/company behaved like you. I'm putting you on my 'who gets whiskey for X'mas list !!"

The registry entries are often added by Windows itself during an install if it somehow thinks that the install either did not complete or there was some other hiccup it will then bring up a dialog box sometimes asking you if the install went okay.  Then it depending on your reply it can add an entry in the registry.  Leaving that entry will cause unstable performance from MBAM to including scanning or scheduling issues and why I highly recommend you remove those entries.  Using the ERUNT tool and/or creating a System Restore would be a backup in case you made a mistake in removal using REGEDIT.EXE but it's actually pretty easy and straight forward once you do it.

Thank you for the kind words on customer service as well.

If you need anything else please let us know

Take care
