MBAM - How long to scan

Recommended Posts

I have run scans at different times and a full scan of 770,000 files takes 6 hours plus ! My computer is a Windows 7 64 bit with plenty of speed and power . I cannot understand why it takes so long . This is the only scanner that gives such long scan times . Any help available here? Do not want to waste anyone's time .

  Thanks

Hello and :welcome: , Falkor:

Just to be clear, are you talking about MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) or MBAR Beta (Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit Beta)?

(My reason for asking is that the subject of this particular thread is MBAR, but it's posted in the support section of the forum for MBAM, and it's a rather old post, at that. ;))

Thanks,

Hi:

Thanks for the clarification.

That's what I thought. :)

As such, I'd refer you to Firefox's earlier explanation for the OP here:

As for the time it takes, its hard to say really as it all depends on many factors, such as computer speed, memory, number of files on your computer and even the infection on the computer can weigh in on the time.  There is no magic number the we can provide you that will say, it will only take 10 minutes.  I know its probably not what you wanted to hear, but that's the case.

In addition, it can take some time for MBAM to unpack and scan archived files (zip, rar, etc).

So, if you have a lot of those types of files, it can prolong the scan time.

Having said that, it's generally neither necessary nor recommended to run routine Full scans.
Quick scans should be all that's needed, under most circumstances.
Frequent full scans, in addition to taking a long time if you have a lot of files, will cause unnecessary wear on your hard drive.
There's more about that here: What is the difference between the three scan types in Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?

If you're concerned about something with your system, then please follow the steps below and post back with BOTH logs from DDS attached to your next reply.

They will help the staff/experts get an idea about what might be going on with your system.

Thanks,

P.S. As your problem is different from the OP and this is an older thread, the mod team might split off your post to a separate thread. ;)

----------------------------

DDS Instructions

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:
dds.scr
dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once it is downloaded, you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  •
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please attach both of the following logs to your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

The logs show that the computer is having issues probably associated with creating System Restore Points which could possibly be due to a hardware/software, or infection issues.  You can try running a Full Disk check on the system and see if that helps or not but but I'm guessing that's not really the issue here, but it could be.

From an elevated admin command prompt type the following and press the Enter key.

CHKDSK C: /R

The command will say the drive cannot be locked and ask if you want to run it on restart.  Type Y and press the Enter key.

Then restart the computer and the disk check should start and run.  It should take at least 10 minutes to run but could take hours depending on how many files and folders you have and how large the drive it.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks

Well the Event Logs show there is an issue, and yes you're correct I doubt it is caused by a disk error but within the realm of possibility if it was a bad cluster it kept hitting.

Not sure what's causing it but something is and without running other scans and tools in the other forum as suggested then there isn't anything else we can assist you with.
