I strongly suspect I am infected with Keylogger

To whom it may concern,

 

I strongly suspect the existence of keylogging software on my computer. I am using ESET NOD32 Antivirus version 6.0.306.0 and it does not detect any suspicious activity on my computer when I run a full scan, yet I am failry certain of the existence of a keylogger.

What is the best course of action to detect such malware, and remove upon detetcion?

Which one am I using?

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.

For Vista or Windows 7-8, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.

When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

• Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
• Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
• When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
Internet access
Windows Update
Windows Firewall
If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot. It's located in the Plugins folder which is in the MBAR folder.

Just run fixdamage.exe.

Verify that they are now functioning normally.

I've got an issue. After running the malwarebytes Anti-Root kit, it found one threat and I let it clean it up. I then restarted my computer (unprompted by the mbar) and my computer loads only my desktop wallpaper and nothing else. I've restarted manually multiple times to no avail. I am now posting this from Safe Mode which appears to functioning (thankfully). I'll attach both logs you requested if that will do any help.

 

PS: to resolve this issue shall I run fixdamage.exe?

MBAR creates a restore point just before it starts the clean up.

Please use that to restore the computer.

Boot into normal mode and press Ctrl + Alt + Delete , that brings up your Task Manager

Click on Processes

See if Explorer.exe is running (listed).

I've tried that multiple times when I was trying to reboot. ONE time I was able to open the task manager and explorer.exe was running, and so was another malwarebyte related process (which was taking up a significant amount of memory usage), but after a few seconds the task manager froze for quite a while and I had no option but to reboot once more. other times I tried rebooting I wasn't able to open up the task manager, and once I found a blank command prompt (along with the usual wallpaper) which I couldn't type anything into. I am giving you this info in the hopes that it might help somehow. Anyhow, I will attempt what you've suggested again and will get back to you right away.

I rebooted and I managed to open the task manager and I found that explorer.exe was indeed running. But Task Manager froze again after a few seconds. And once more I noticed that a number of malwarebyte-related processes were running at relatively high memory usages. So I uninstalled Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (maybe it was interfering with ESET Anti-Virus which doesn't function well with other security software running concurrently) and I rebooted normally and, voila!, everything is running fine.

back to out original issue. what now? Do I seem to be infected with a keylogger or somekind of malware?

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.
