Calling all gamer's. I need help

My son wants to download a game website called Steam. It has numerous games to download from the site that you do have to pay for. I would like to know if there is a way to safely do this without infecting my computer? The times before that he has downloaded games I have gotten really bad infections. I do not want to go through that again.

Steam is completely safe, they also have a free category of games to play. They also have game sales constantly, some times upwards of 75% off, every winter and summer they have huge sales, the summer and winter sales generally last about 2 weeks, and they are generally huge bundles of games.
