Updating Issues Again

I'm worried about getting that Conficker thing since I always seem to get viruses--not so much now that I have MBAM, Avast!, and Ccleaner...but still, the 'rents would murder me if I got something like Conficker. But, anyways.

So, I was checking my updates at the Microsoft Website and it wanted me to get this one Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86. I said yes. It failed to install. I try a second time, it got to the install part, but the bar never moved. So I hit cancel, which took a lifetime for it to do that.

I know last time I had an issue with an update, I was told to manually download it, so I went to the Microsoft Download Center and looked it up and got like six different results (here). All of which said something about 2003 or 2008 and Vista. Well, I don't have a Vista, so that ruled those out, but then I looked at the description:

"Install this update to address a set of known application compatibility issues with Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1."

Didn't they stop doing stuff for Service Pack 1? And I have Service Pack 3, so does that mean I can just let the update be tempermental and not worry about it?

Oh, also, I went to run MBAM earlier, but it froze 3 seconds into a Quick Scan--and it was just starting up. I clicked the update tab, and looked at the thread about Freezing but really didn't understand it, so I pretty much left it alone after updating it.

My Firefox randomly froze, and I had to force close it, and when it reopened it had a new add-on: Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant. It didn't sound like it'd do any good and I hate keeping stuff you don't need, so I googled it and came across this thread: Remove the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant (ClickOnce) Firefox Extension and now it's gone.

But, if the update didn't work why did it install that on my FF? When my Java updated it did a similar thing and I have a Java Quick Start add on in my FF :) At least for Java they told you they'd add a plugin/add on or whatever to IE but they never mentioned adding it to Firefox.

Do I even need the Java Quick Start thing for Firefox?

Nah, you don't need the Java Quick Start, it just makes java stuff load a bit faster (I always disable it since most pages don't use java). As far as Service Pack 1, it was referring to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1, not XP Service Pack 1 :) . Anyway, if you wanna try downloading and installing the update manually you can get it here. The one you want to download is the third one listed at the bottom of the page called NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86.exe. You might also review the info provided here regarding your .NET Framework issues. It's all good info, but you should focus primarily on the stuff related to 3.5 as every build installs seperately.
