Question about PUP and real-time protection

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm trialing Malware bytes Pro at the moment and coincidentally happened to download an app called MediaInfo which apparently is adware supported. In fact, when I scan the installer manually Malware Bytes detects:

PUP.Optional.OpenCandy

If I go ahead with the program install and forget to opt-out to the bundled adware, Malware Bytes does not give me any warn me, even if the Protection Monitor is active and running.

Is that the way it's supposed to work or I'm missing something here?

Many thanks.

From what I've observed, Malwarebytes will only detect potentially unwanted programs (PUP) and give you the ability to remove them only if you do a manual scan and specifically tell the program to remove them.

I've been running into this a lot lately. It's not that it's an issue or that the PUP is malware, it's more of a notice to you so that you are conscious that this can potentially be a point of infection at some point. It sort of an awarness compaign to let people know that this kind of thing gets bundled in with some types of free software.

I'm not sure if unattended scheduled scans are manual scans but I run a daily overnight unattended full scan and it's detected PUP's in that mode of scanning.
