Seems like I've got a CLB rootkit, I've got the symptoms (can't update AVG, MBAM crashes when it tries to update, superantispyware won't update) I get sent random places on the net when searching, other security websites are blocked. I ran rootrepeal, it didn't find anything. I ran MBAM by updating it from another computer and it found two things:

Hi,

It's the Trojan.Daonol that was the main cause. This one is responsible for Hijacking your searchengines.

But.. It shouldn't cause a BSOD after removal though - that doesn't make sense. Guess it was something else that rather caused the BSOD.

Are you still having problems now?

Also, please update your AVG7, because it's outdated.

Please restore this one from the quarantine folder:

C:\Program Files\Opanda\PowerExif 1.2\dfs.dll (Adware.WinButler) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

(don't worry, that one didn't cause the BSOD either :D )

Then, scan with malwarebytes in developer mode and post the malwarebytes log.

1. Click the Start Menu.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in "mbam.exe /developer", without the quotes.

4. Run the same type of scan you did before and save the logfile and post it.

Alright, did that, but I figured I'd post the log on the odd chance I might BSOD again.

When I did the "run from last known good" it came back (obviously!) so I nuked it again. Hopefully I'll be able to reboot without any problem this time.

Hi,

The Daonol Trojan is still present. That's strange since Mbam should delete it after reboot. The BSOD may be caused by the Daonol trojan btw..

Do next please..

* Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)

Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.

Choose 'delete a file on reboot'

In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\undp.suf

Click open.

Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok

Your system should reboot now.

Check again afterwards that the C:\WINDOWS\undp.suf is gone after reboot

Let me know.

Check again afterwards that the C:\WINDOWS\undp.suf is gone after reboot

Let me know.

I think the reason it may keep coming back is because when the machine BSOD's, the only way I can get it to boot normally again is to use the "last known good configuration" which I think restores undp.suf?

This may be a dumb question, but I'm not entirely clear on one point: Once I've restored with "last known good" I don't have to run MBAM again on the reboot, just run HJT and set it to delete undp.suf, right? Or should I run MBAM, use it to "remove" undp.suf (since it was restored by the "last known good") and then run HJT to remove the file on boot?

I'm probably making this way more complicated than it needs to be. :)

Just perform my steps and use Hijackthis > delete on reboot.

No need to use MBAM then.

Still strange what is causing the BSOD though, because Daonol isn't supposed to cause this - but on the other side, imho it's still a buggy piece of malware, so that may explain it.

Yes, the fact that you're doing a "last known good" explains why the file is back again afterwards.

Good to hear and Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
