Other Computer Infected

Recommended Posts

I went to do clean up on my Grandmothers computer. First I ran SuperAntiSpyware - ended up with 88 adware.tracking cookies; but, none where in the registries or memory. So that was all good and all of 'em were quarantined.

Then I went to download Malwarebytes. Ran a scan -- uh oh, 11 issues. (Adware.Minibug x7, Heuristics.Malware, adware.Mywebsearch) 3 of the infections were deleted. The other ones (also the ones I listed) ended up in the quarantine. Here's the MBAM log:

Then I downloaded Avast! next. I said yes to letting it do a Boot scan of all the drives -- and the comp restarted and did a scan much like how CHKDSK runs. But, I have 2 infections; both are Win32:adware-gen. One is her System Volume Information, and the other I don't remember. I can't find the log for it though.

Her computer restarts, and it says her Firewall isn't on. Sometime about a Norton Internet Worm thing. I chose the default Windows one, and it said it couldn't turn on but it did anyways.

Then I came here, and downloaded HJT. So here's that log:

Please help? :D

PS: Oh, I also updated her Internet Explorer from 7 to 8. And when it rebooted from that an error came up:

"To protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

Name: Generic Host Processes for Win32

Publisher: Microsoft Corportation"

That didn't pop up the last time it rebooted though (which was after the avast! scan)

PPS: Also, I'm aware that she needs a better firewall, but Online Armor tends to pop up a lot of things you have to allow, not allow etc, and those things would just confuse her. So, I need an easier firewall fo her :D

PPPS: And I ran Ccleaner multiple times to delete the invalid/leftover registry keys. She had over 300 of those, but they are all gone now and none of 'em was serious.

*sidenote: At least it's not my compy this time ^-^

Hi,

I suggest you update first to Service Pack 3.

As for the Firewall, in many cases, people don't really know how to use and configure a firewall. Result > programs etc get blocked while they are not supposed to be blocked.

That's why, if you know how a firewall works, then install one. Online Armor is indeed a great one, but it does give a lot of notifications.

Otherwise, look in this list under Firewalls for the ones I recommend: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/Links.html

In case a Firewall is rather confusing and annoying, then I suggest the Windows Firewall.
