Why is SQL Express not optional

Recommended Posts

Maybe I missed something, but it would be nice if I wasn't forced to install SQL Express.  I already had SQL 2008R2 installed on this server.

I agree,  We should not be forced to install SQL Express on the console server if we know ahead of time that we will be using SQL Server 2008 or later.

This may be a bit late but SQL Express is not required if you select a pre-existing database instead of the embedded database option during installation.

djacobson is correct IF you are speaking about Management Console 1.4 or 1.4.1.  Earlier versions forced installation of SQL Express (to everyone's dismay).
