I am wondering, what the differences between adobe flash player and Microsoft silverlight are. As far as I have been able to tell they both do the same thing, Only difference I have seen so far is it seems flash is used more and less secure (do correct me if I am wrong).

yeppers ... both are proprietary chunks-o-software .

basically speaking , they are different in exactly how they encode and render audio and video files .

i will say that silverlight is better than flash in many instances ... as far as being able to squeeze the most out of the least (bandwidth wise) .

there are many different codecs out there for encoding audio/video .

start here :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec

then here :

(fyi ... personally , VLC is a great AV player)
