Google Earth Infection?

Recommended Posts

I'm running a PC with Windows 7 Home Edition

I recently had a message from 'Interactive Services Detection' to say there is a problem with a Google Earth plugin. I foolishly clicked on 'Display message' and I'm convinced it started to generate a download while freezing my PC.

As I wasn't convinced this had an innocent response and I ran MWB Pro but found no problems. I did a System Restore to an earlier point as a precaution.  The same message has returned today so I tried to uninstall Google Earth. While doing so I received a message to ask if wished to run a file from an unknown source - C:\Windows\Installer\a7b4f42.msi

Didn't expect to have this message so looked to locate the file without success. Googled the file and the Google Earth problem but can't find anything.

I've copied the contents of the Attach & DDS files below as requested

Am I being neurotic? Any suggestions very gratefully received.

Bernie
PS - Interactive Services Detection has just popped up again!

Hi Bernie and :welcome:

The box is infected and we'll do our best to try and clean it up.  Please make sure that all important data is backed up to an external drive though as one never knows what might happen during scanning and cleaning.

Please run the following steps and post back all the logs as ATTACHMENTS by clicking on the More Reply Options button.
Please don't put logs in code or quote tags or copy/paste them into your reply unless you're unable to attach them.
Please enable your system to show hidden files: How to see hidden files in Windows

If you're unable to complete one of the STEPS please go ahead and move onto the next one.

P2P/Piracy Warning:

  • If you're using Peer 2 Peer software such as uTorrent, BitTorrent or similar you must either fully uninstall them or completely disable them from running while being assisted here.
  • Failure to remove or disable such software will result in your topic being closed and no further assistance being provided.
  • If you have illegal/cracked software, cracks, keygens etc. on the system, please remove or uninstall them now and read the policy on Piracy.

STEP 01
Backup the Registry:
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
  • Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

STEP 02
Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop.

You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • RogueKiller 32-bit | RogueKiller 64-bit
  • Quit all running programs.
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • For Vista,Windows 7/8, Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
  • Read and accept the EULA (End User Licene Agreement)
  • Click Scan to scan the system.
  • When the scan completes Close the program > Don't Fix anything!
  • Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!
  • Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

STEP 03
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from here

Sorry, on completion I couldn't find a green button to get the report. I went to the quarantine manager and copied the contents (below).
Two of the items did not have a 'cure' option (only Move, Delete or Ignore). As neither appeared relevant I opted for Delete

So how is the computer running now?

Are there still any signs of an infection?

Please download Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi,

I'm a lot more comfortable about thing now but, as you know, infections don't always make themselves known to you so although I REALLY APPRECIATE the excellent support you've provided I'll try to remain vigilant in the coming days/weeks.

The good news is you appear to have given any possible infections a dose of their own medicine and it looks like the 'Interactive Services Detection' has disappeared.

Would you suggest I uninstall the programs you have recommended I use through this process? (- e.g. ERUNT1.1j, ESET Online Scanner3).

Once again, many thanks for your help. The checkup.txt file is attached.

Regards

Bernie

Hi Bernie,

As you can see from that log you have some old outdated software that can lead to an infection.

Please uninstall ALL versions of Java and if possible try to avoid having to use Java.  If you really do have to use it then make sure it's always only the latest version and uninstall all older versions.  That is probably one of the most common means to allow an infection to get onto your computer.

http://www.java.com if you do need it.

Then update those other items as well

Adobe Reader is now up to version 11.x

Firefox should also either be updated or uninstalled if you don't want to keep it updated.

Yes, you should clean up and remove the tools used.

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall or download and run the uninstaller)

Please download OTC to your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe

Double-click OTC to run it. (Vista and up users, please right click on OTC and select "Run as an Administrator")
Click on the CleanUp! button and follow the prompts.
(If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.)
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process, choose Yes.
After the reboot all the tools we used should be gone.
Note: Some more recently created tools may not yet be removed by OTC. Feel free to manually delete any tools it leaves behind.

Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

Please read the following when you have time and if you have any questions let me know.

Hi,

Thanks for advice, I never appreciated the significance of outdated Java. Decided to uninstall completely and see how often I need it before I reinstall the latest version.

Didn't use ComboFix but I've run OTC to further clean things up.

I've had a quick look at the security doc you suggested and will look more closely later. Looks like a sensible approach to follow.

Fingers crossed I'll not need your advice again but have really valued the support provided.

Regards

Bernie

One of the best tools you'll find to help keep safe is using Firefox with the NoScript and AdBlockPus add-ons.  Many users have a difficult time understanding, using, and training it but once you get the hang of it you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.  Certainly worth looking into it in my opinion.

Hi Ron (?),

I've uninstalled Firefox but following your comments I think I'll give it a try.

The original problem appeared to happen after I returned from a two week holiday and had a huge email INBOX to sort out. I'm guessing in my haste I may have opened something that generated the 'Interactive Services Detection' problem. Another lesson learned there!

Not sure if I've been helped by Ron Lewis or if that is a general tag line at the bottom of the replies. However, found advice really helpful, keep up the good work.

Regards

Bernie
