Missing Network Connections as well as Internet

I have a PC running Windows XP SP2 that I've been working with and after uninstalling some suspicious programs, I can no longer connect to the internet or my server. A friend of mine said that Windows should be able to automatically pick up that kind of info but it hasn't. At first it showed my server in the Network Connections but now they are missing. How can I fix this? Any help is appreciated.
