I first posted this problem here and when no solution was found I was sent to malware forum, but no virus was found. However, I think I have identified the problem. There seems to be a conflict with Avira's Web Protection module. Mbam (free) manual update will work if Avira Web Protection is disabled. This same issue was resolved a couple years ago for XP and Vista, but may have resurfaced in Windows 8 which I what I am running. Developers may need to look at this. I am sorry for taking your time on this, but trying to update with Avira disabled was one of the first things I tried before posting and I didn't notice that the Web Protection Module often takes more that one tick to uncheck. That's not the case with the Real Time & Mail components , so I was fooled into thinking everything was disabled when it was not. Probably a quirk in my computer. Thanks for your help.
