Malwarebytes won't run

Recommended Posts

I seem to have picked up something that is causing my Yahoo search results to redirect somewhere else. When searching (on Google) for an answer, there were many references to this product, so I thought I'd see if it'd help me out. However, once downloaded and installed, it won't do anything. I start the program, and absolutely nothing happens. No error codes, nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium.

You may want to try renaming the MBAM exe file to see if that will allow it to run. It is possible it is the malware which is preventing it from starting.

It would also be a good idea to follow the directions in the HiJackThis forum and somone will help you get cleaned up.

Yes, types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not run, try renaming it and changing the file extension.

  • Open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files.
  • Right-click on the mbam.exe file, rename it to myscan and change the .exe extension to .scr, .com, .pif, or .bat.
  • Double-click on myscan.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to launch the program and perform a Quick scan in normal mode.

If using Windows Vista, refer to How to Change a File Extension in Windows Vista.

Thanks for the help! Changing the file name allowed it to run (though I didn't need to change the extension.

It found the bugger that was redirecting my searches, but there's either a part of it left, or another hanging around that keeps disabling my firewall on startup. Research has shown me that this is a rather obnoxious thing to get rid of, so I'm taking Insomniac's suggestion and heading over to the HJT forum for some guidance.

I have both of the same problems as tlynnjpeg. I've installed Malwarebytes for the 3rd time, and it still won't open. The reason I have uninstalled and then reinstalled it is that I was following a suggestion from elsewhere in this forum to do that. I ran the recommended cleanup utility in between installations and restarted the computer. I also have the Ad-Aware program which does find a malware called UACybwqwaom.sys which it says it successfully quarantined, but the same malware usuallyshows up again at the next scan. Anyway, I've looked in the Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware folder in Program files to rename the mbam.exe file as in the quoted suggestion, but there isn't a file in there with that name - I just have mbam with no extension. I did try renaming that one previously, but nothing happened. Malwarebytes still won't do anything, and I'm still stuck with malware on my computer.

I have Windows XP Media Center edition version 2002 with service pack 3, HP Pavilion, AMD Athlon 64 processor.

Thanks for any help offered.

Thanks for the tips! The 3rd one on your list is what worked for me - the tool at

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12709

It found the offending malware immediately, and even showed it in red letters so it was easy for me to find and wipe the file. Now the Malwarebytes program will open and works! It removed the other remaining trojans. I have now tested the Yahoo search and it no longer is being redirected. Yippee!

Thanks very much for your help.
