Pareto Logic Xoftspy Antivirus

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get some info on this Antivirus program that my sister was scammed into buying along with some other programs that are found free on the internet. The person that installed these programs did with remote access to her computer and in the process removed the Malwarebytes program, Firefox and Ccleaner although he then reinstalled Ccleaner. Looks like he put on speedupmypc and ZoomBrowser EX also. He really socked it to her on pricing too.Two names that were involved were Shane Archer manager and Mark Jones tech support. Any info about this program would be appreciated.

Xoftspy used to be classified as a Rogue antispyware, largely because the pressurized marketing practices that the parent company Paretologic used to promote their products. The company and their products were de-listed quite some time ago and there is nothing to be concerned about their presence on the PC.....except 1, The product is junk and offers little or no protection 2, Allowing remote access to anyone (particularly someone you don't know) is not a very secure practice (to say the least). My view is that this approach was more likely to be the action of unscrupulous affiliates being paid for getting certain junk software onto users PC's rather than Pareto themselves. I would however follow advice in getting the PC in question checked and pursue a full refund.

www.ammyy.com hosts remote desktop software that is used by the scammers. It should be removed immediately. Your Sister clearly fell for a common scam practice whereby someone (usually with an Indian accent, but an improbably English name like John) claims to be representing Microsoft and they have discovered your PC is infected and is engaged in affecting others. If you google Indian Microsoft phone calls or words to that effect you'll find hundreds of shared incidences of which your Sister is but one.

Probably best to actually have someone also help you review the computer to ensure that it is not infected or running stuff it should not be.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I removed everything that I could find to get her going again and she has contacted the credit card company to keep from getting in anymore trouble there. I re installed Malwarebytes and ran a scan but there was nothing much to report. I'll get back to it in a couple of days to dig deeper with some of your other experts and I reminded her that Microsoft does not make phone calls to sell antivirus programs. Thanks again.
