Restore Startup foder?

When I first created me user account after formatting, I saw a folder in the start menu called 'startup'. (this is with vista 32)

I opened it and seeing as it was empty I deleted it, thinking it would just delete the start menu shortcut. I read a bit more about what this thing actually does and decided to see if I could restore it.

Merely dropping a folder in to the proper location (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) results in a non-functional Startup folder in the start menu.

Also, the 'all users' startup folder seems to be missing as well, it is not found here (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs) (This is viewed by my user though, I'll try in a minute as admin).

If I create the 'all users' startup folder, I get the folder in start menu with the correct right-click menu, and it functions. However it functions for all users, not just my own.

Is there any way to restore my own startup folder? I tried copying another user's but it didn't work.

Ahh crap... now my sister's startup folder doesn't work either... and I didn't even modify hers, only tried to copy it over. Bah!

*************************EDIT**********************************

Fixed it. Needed to re-make both startup folders then log off and on. Now I have a startup folder pointing to my own users's directory that also has the proper right-click interface... BUT now I have another minor problem!

In the process of troubleshooting this issue, I created an extra user to see if it would work on that user. I deleted the user, told vista to delete it's files, but it still has it's own directory in the 'users' folder. The user doesn't show up at the start menu or in control panel, it's folders have just been left behind. I used to have this problem pre-format as well, it dissapeard after formatting but now after using the pc for a few months it's back.

Is it safe to simply delete that user's folder now that I've deleted them in control panel?

*************************MORE EDIT**********************************

Did some more searching, sifting through various forums and finally found somone telling somone else how to delete a user. He mentioned that it will often leave that folder behind and it's safe to delete. During some more testing I'd ended up with two old user folders in my users folder. One deleted fine, the other reported it was in use by another program. Restart solved that and now they are gone.

Has anyone else had this happen / is willing to make and delete a new user to see if it happens / has any idea why it happens?

No worries, it's just "Windows Leftovers" so to speak, and you should be fine deleting the extra user folder as you did. I've done it before after a repair install (it leaves the old user account folders behind). I've not had any issues with it since I did it (it's been like a year or more) so you should be fine.

Now it starts to get really weird.

I know that if you try and create an account with the same name as an existing user folder, it adds the pc name to the end of the new folder so they are different. So, to check if vista thought there was still an account I made a new account identical to one of the ones I deleted. It all worked fine and had the normal name, so I went to delete that account as it had served it's purpose.

Deleted it's user folder, logged out then realised I'd forgotten to remove it via control panel first. Whoops! Logged back in, restored it's user folder from recycle bin, checked the folder was back in 'users' and then deleted via control panel. Went back to 'users' to manually delete the folder, and it was gone!

It seems once you've claimed permission to the folder by modifying it in some way (such as accidently sending it to recycle bin :( ) then the control panel suddenly regains the ability to delete it itself. Arn't computers weird?

True, true.

Only one question remains... Where did my italics go? :(

Also, what's with the quote button in this forum? When I hit it it goes red and the + turns to a -

In every other forum I'm on it drops the person's message you hit the quote button for into the text area.

That's the way this forum software works.

Click on quote (it turns red) then click on reply.
