IObit, Spigot, Application Updater Virus?

Recommended Posts

I usually use Chrome but it kept crashing so in mid-June I switched to Firefox. Firefox kept re-directing my search engine to Yahoo which seemed odd to me. I'm not extremely tech-savvy but I did try to change the default to Google.  It didn't work but I thought it was due to my lack of knowledge/capabilities.

Tonight I got frustrated with Firefox/Yahoo so I did more searching. I found that IObit, Spigot, and Application Updater viruses can cause this problem. I looked on my computer and found them all. I was able to delete IObit and Spigot but not Application Updater.

I updated and ran Malwarebytes but it didn't detect anything.  I don't know how to get rid of this and there may be more that I'm not aware of.  I also have a little notification on my screen that says "Software download complete. [install Now] [install later]"  There is no way to just close it.  I didn't try to download anything so I'm not sure why it's there. It looks worrisome to me.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello and :welcome:

Please run the following and post back all the logs as ATTACHMENTS by clicking on the More Reply Options button.

STEP 01

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
  • Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

    STEP 02

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

    • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
    • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
    • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
    • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
    • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
    • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
    • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt
    STEP 03

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

    • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
    • Right click over JRT.exe and select Run as administrator on Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click on XP.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next reply message
    • When completed make sure to re-enable your antivirus
    STEP 04

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode to your desktop.

    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • If prompted by the User Account Control click Yes to allow it to run.
    • Under Actions click on the Delete button.
    • Click OK on all prompts.
    • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the entire contents of that logfile to your next reply.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt where the number in brackets indicates how often it was run.
    STEP 05

    button_eos.gif

Please go here to run the online antivirus scannner from ESET.

Great those logs look good now.  Please run the following and pay attention to the step for creating a log.  You can print this out if you need to.  I'll check back on you some time tomorrow as its late for me.

dr_web_cureit_zpse80d87bf.jpg

  • Please download Dr.Web CureIt! antivirus and save it to your computer. The file size is in excess of 100MB
  • NOTE: Free usage of Dr.Web CureIt! for business purposes is illegal.
  • Internet Explorer may show a warning when downloading - the file is safe to download from the provided link.
  • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts while scanning.
  • Once the scans have completed please re-enable your antivirus.
  • If using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO you can right click over the tray icon and disable the Protection Modules
  • If needed you can also temporarily disable it from starting with Windows
  • Temporarily turn off any other security add-ons or applications you may also have.
  • Once you have downloaded Dr.Web CureIt! you should right click over it and choose Properties and verify it has a Digital Signature.
  • If it does not have a Digital Signature then do not run it.
  • Close all open programs including all Web browsers and then double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the installer.
  • You should have your User Account Control (UAC) enabled for improved security and which should then produce a dialog box asking for approval to run the installer.
  • Click on the Yes button to start the installer.
  • Click OK to scan your computer in the Enhanced Protection Mode
  • Click on the check box to agree to participate in their software improvement program.
  • Then if needed choose your Language by clicking on the small globe like icon in the upper right corner by the wrench.
  • Then click on the Continue button and then click on the Select objects for scanning link just below the "Start scanning" button.
  • Place a check mark on all the items except for Temporary files and System restore points - those items should not have a check mark on them.
  • Then click on the Start scanning button.
  • If a threat is found you can click on the Action column in the program.
  • Your options will be Cure or Ignore
  • If you see an item that you are absolutely sure is OK, then un-check the check box for that item, otherwise keep it on Cure.
  • Then click on the Neutralize button.
  • Once completed click on the green Open Report link. It will open the report in NOTEPAD
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called Cureit.log
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit!
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, attach the log Cureit.log you saved previously in your next reply.
  • Re-Enable your antivirus and other security programs when all done.

Thanks

I ran Dr.Web CureIt! and no threats were detected. I didn't see a way to save a report.  There was not green Open Report link.

Yesterday, during the ESET scan, there were 25 threats/bad files detected (something in red). The instructions didn't say anything about removing them. Should I have done that?

I still have the "Software download complete" notification on my screen. I've attached a screenshot of it in case that is helpful.

Thanks again.

Most of those are already in the trash but lets run another scanner to find and remove other stuff that might be hiding.

Please visit this webpage for instructions on downloading and running ComboFix: How to use ComboFix

Please make sure you disable your security applications before running ComboFix.

Once Combofix has completed it will produce and open a log file.  Please attach that log file to your next reply.
If needed the file can be located here:  C:\combofix.txt

NOTE: If you receive the message "illegal operation has been attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", just reboot the computer.

I ran combofix and now I don't have network connection. Regardless of the browser I choose I get an error message that says, "illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."

If I click on "connect to a network" in the control panel, I get the same error.

I'm using my iPad now.

I got rid of the stupid dialogue box!!!  I kept googling and finally found someone who had the same problem. It was UA.exe which  is a Verizon Wireless upgrade assistant for my Samsung cell phone. When I got my new phone, I remember a popup asking me if I wanted to download the software and I am positive that I said NO.

I went ahead and installed it and then immediately uninstalled it.

Verizon's developer is a dummy. Why would they have such a nondescript dialogue box? Grrr!

I think I'm good now but let me know if you think otherwise.

Thanks for all your help!

I think you should be okay but let's double check some software versions to make sure you're not running old exploited code.

Next, download Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I checked my Norton 360 and it says that Smart Firewall is on.

I uninstalled Java 6 Update 7 and I updated Adobe Reader.

Thank you very much for all your help.  I only have one other question: Is the MB pro version something that is used in conjunction with anti-virus software like Norton?

Thanks again!!

Yes it is. In fact I run Norton Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro on my wife's computer and she's a clicker and it's kept her pretty well infection free now for a couple years now. Of course you need to keep other things like Java, Flash, Reader, etc up to date as well as the Microsoft Windows updates each month.

It will need to probably have some exclusions made though in order to work properly together.

Oh, that's good to know!  My Norton subscription expires in 30 days so I need to start looking at my renewal options.  MB has saved my family many times (my 13-year old son is a clicker!!). I've gotten more than $25 worth out of the free version, that's for sure. I definitely want to support MB.

If you're going to buy then now is the time... Future versions may be stopping the lifetime support except for those that already own a copy.

If there is nothing else then you can remove any tools and logs used and please read the following when you have time.

Prevention of Malware

I'll go ahead then and close your topic soon if there is nothing else.

Take care
