Unauthorized computers on my network

Hi!

I am having a problem with an unauthorized computer on my network and I really hope someone can help me. There are actually 2 different ones that rotate. These are not family members and they prevent me from accessing the internet. I have tried to click on them and put them in the trash and find out more about them by clicking on properties, but I am not able to. I disabled my homegroup, but they still show up as being on my network. Is there any way I can permenantly remove these computers from my network? I do  not understand how they were able to attach to my computer because I do have current anti-virus. I also tried doing a complete system restore of my computer wiping it back to factory settings and clearing everything off. I noticed that when I did that I could still see some of my previous bookmarks so these computers may be stopping me from actually clearing everything off of my computer. I am not overly technical, but I realize that this is wreaking havoc on my computer which I need for school. If someone could help; I would be very grateful.

I am on Windows 7 home premium.

Thank you. :)

Your post is confusing.

You say you have "unauthorized computer on my network" and then say "tried to click on them and put them in the trash".

Well yeah, if you have a physical computer on your LAN then you can't just remove them by virtually putting them in the computer's trash.

Please describe your network which should include the computers and other devices on the LAN, what your ISP providing you and what equipment is used to get Internet access and share is for the LAN.

I would also like "screenshots" attached showing the "unauthorized computer on my network".

Hi,

I am sorry if my posting was confusing. These are unauthorized computers on my network. One is named "Gwen" and the other "Anastasia" and they rotate. I didn't add them to my network and don't even know people by those names. I did try to drag them to the trash which didn't work (though I really wish it would have). There should only be my computer on this network. I have a wireless router that I use high speed internet to connect to. I tried to attach the screenshots to my post using the my media option above. I clicked search to add them and it wouldn't let me. Is there another way for me to post them?

Thank you. :)

Hi,

I am sorry for not being more precise. I have suddenlink internet services and a linksys router and it is model wrt160n. I am attaching some screenshots that I hope explain in more detail what is going on. These computers prevent my internet from working; especially the Anastasia one. The Gwen one allows me to use internet, but I am afraid that it is collecting my private information. After I did the complete computer restore I downloaded several Windows updates and now there are more for me to download. I don't think these are normal updates.

Thank you.

OK.  Now we are getting somewhere.

You need to secure your WiFi.

Connect directly to the Router via an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the back of the Router.

Login to the Routerhttp://192.168.1.1/

Go to the Wireless tab - Set a new SSID.  Something unique that you know and like but does not point specifically to you.

Go to the Wireless Security link - Set to WPA2 (AES is best) and set a SSID password.  Make it Strong using UPPERCASE, lowercase, special characters and numbers; 10 digits or more.  Example:  $$J85MyNet2013  and write it down.  You can put it on a sticky note and place it physically under the Router.

Go to the Administration tab - Create a password for accessing the Router.  It can be the same as the SSID Password or unique.  Also if you see a setting that "Disables Remote Management" you want that.  You want to DISABLE REMOTE MANAGEMENT.  That means one can not manage the Router from the POV of the Internet, only the LAN side.

For now on you will use the NEW SSID and Password combo on wireless devices.

NOTE:  If you have never gone into your router, then the default is either...

Hi again,

Thank you very much for the help. :) I am going to give it a try and hope it works. I do have a question about connecting directly to the router. Does this mean that I take the cord from it and plug it in to my computer? Does the cord go from the router to my computer or from the modem to my computer? I am just a little confused by how to get started.

Thank you. :)

Hi,

I am bumping this thread in case anyone else may be able to help me get my computer back on track. I have tried the suggestions above with not so great success. It seems like there is a hacker on my computer that reverted the router changes I made previously. I can no longer access my router settings oro make any changes. I am just now able to get onine by leaving the router off for over 10 minutes. When I tried to put in my router password information it would not recognize it. I no longer see the Gwen computer in my network, but my router has been changed to string of numbers. If anyone can help without being impolite I would really appreciate it.

Thank you :)

J85 you have to give details.  If you can see the Router and attempt to login to the router than you must be connected to it.

If you are unable to login to the router, it isn't a case where a "hacker is on your computer", you are not giving it the correct credentials and you are not stating what credentials you are using.

If you can NOT login to the router, we can always reset the router back to factory defaults which will be the credentials I supplied in Post #6 and start from scratch.

In the picture I posted in Post #8, you will see a reset button next to the Power Connection.  Using a pen or other object and push that reset button holding it down for 15 ~ 30 seconds.
