Run-time error 2147417848

My wife was browsing facebook running Windows 7 on a laptop when something happened. Internet explorer closed and when re-started, closed again. Windows solutions could not find a solution. E-mails do not work, AVG does not even try to load, Malwarebytes comes up with runtime error 2147417848 (80010108) and the message "The object invoked has disconnected from it's client".

Ad-Aware has found nothing. What has happened and what can be done?
