HijackThis Log - gaopdxcounter trojan

Recommended Posts

Here is a HijackThis log from my PC. I have been experiencing something I had never heard of, but after researching it for days on end I have come to find that it's similar to the common cold in that lots of people catch it but there doesn't seem to be a way to cure it! I'm talking about that nonsense where you can't use search engines because every result winds up redirecting you to another useless site. And malware / spyware programs either won't run or won't update properly. And Windows Firewall is always disabled upon restarting the computer.

After running Malwarebytes I noticed a lot of things were caught and then removed. However, after restarting the computer, there were two new ones as if by malware magic. One of them is called gaopdxcounter and I've seen others who have had this problem as well. At any rate, here is the HijackThis log as well as the original Malwarebytes log followed by the most recent Malwarebytes log from the last time I ran it. Hope someone can figure this out because it's driving me nuts.

Hi ya,

You will have the CLB driver(Rootkit infection) active on your computer.

Please follow the instructions in the following walkthrough and then post back the results of your MBAM scan log and also a fresh HJT log.

I'm sorry, but I do not see a walkthrough posted here.

Okay, I ran Root Repeal and used it to wipe out the gaopdx....sys files (there were three of them, not just one). I then rebooted and ran MBAM but it didn't find anything else. AVG Anti-Virus was running real-time in the background, and while MBAM was scanning a window from AVG popped up saying it found a gaopdx...dll file, so maybe it took care of it before MBAM could find it.

At any rate, here is the new HijackThis log followed by the MBAM log.

Ok then yeah AVG intercepted as we were about to read the file but this is a good sign that AVG is working again :(

So with that it sounds that the CLB rootkit has been disabled by RR :)

Are you still experiencing the any of the issue's reported in your 1st post ?

So far things look like they're back to normal. I tried a few search engine results and they went where I wanted them to go with no redirects. Also I was able to update some of the security programs without getting errors.

Thanks for the help! This was driving me crazy for days!

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
