Question about the scheduler

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm using the latest version of MBAM Pro 1.75.0.1300 on Win8 Pro x64; I have set updates to be done hourly and a quick scan weekly.

Under "Scheduler Settings", the tab "Starting on" is empty for both tasks : is this normal ?

Thanks for your assistance.    :)

No, I don't believe that's normal, although I suppose it's possible since, after the first time they've each been executed, the product will no longer need the "Starting on" value (it's only relevant if the "Starting on" value is at a point in the future). Are your scheduled updates and scans working?

There's definitely something odd then. I'm glad it's working, but the display issue is not normal.

If you wouldn't mind, please do the following:

Create an mbam-check log:

  • Download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double-click on mbam-check.exe to run it, it should then open a log file
  • Please copy and paste the entire contents of the log into your next post

Thank you for your time; however everything seems to work fine, I thought that something was not correct (to be sure, I even just made a complete uninstall using your tool and reinstalled freshly. Before that, I saved my previous exclusions and scan logs and "injected" them afterwoods in the new installation. Still the same situation.).

For your information : as I have 2 user accounts on the machine (Administrator & Standard user account), I ran mbam-check.exe under administrator privileges ('thought it would be better); attached you'll find the results.

I believe I may have figured out what's causing it.

From your log:

Time Format Settings:

=====================

Should be:

h:mm:ss tt

AM

PM

:

Currently:

REG_SZ HH:mm:ss

REG_SZ

REG_SZ

REG_SZ

The time format settings are not the defaults.

In addition to that, your code page settings are set to Multilingual (Latin I):

OEMCP: 850 Please refer to this link for details: Here

This also may be the culprit. Your Terminal Services service is disabled. It should be set to Manual by default.:

Terminal Services Status for (null) entries in PM logs and GetUserToken errors:

===============================================================================

TERMService:

==============

Type : 32

State : 1 (The service is not running.) (State is stopped)

WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 1077

SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0

CHECKPOINT : 0

WAIT_HINT : 0

TermService Start is set to: 4 (Disabled) <-- TERMSERVICE SHOULD NOT BE DISABLED

At least I have reset the service to the default value "manual"; I disabled it wrongly a while ago.

The other settings are defined through the original Windows installation (I have a french version of Windows installed with location in Belgium), so I suppose I will have to live with an empy "Start on" tab ...

Again, thanks for your time !   :)

You're welcome, I'm glad I could help and I'm glad that at least they're working, even if they are displaying funny :).

We plan some pretty major changes in the future for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which will hopefully include better international language and display support, so hopefully eventually issues like this will be a thing of the past, but for now we'll have to wait and see.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I have to come back because there is obviously a big issue with the scheduled scans. Firstly : strictly no problem with the updates; they are running as scheduled.

But the scheduled scans are completely ignored by MBAM. I didn't realize that yesterday firstly as I'm using your software since a many years without any problem but this was on Win 7 Pro x64 (but with the same time format and code page settings !) and I'm now on Win 8 Pro x64. Secondly, I have scheduled, as said before, a weekly quick scan with recovery 23; however this last times, the computer was never on during the scheduled time and I launched the scans manually.

Some more details :

- all future scheduled scans will not be executed

- if I set up a weekly scan now, start time this morning, recovery 23 (max.), the scan (if still in the recovery time) will, of course, run without problem. But will be ignored next week ...

I'm really sorry for this confusion   ; however, I'm just wondering why I didn't find any topic about this in the forum because there must be other people out there, with the same time format and code page settings .....

Any suggestions on this issue would be highly appreciated as, for the moment, I'm not able to use all the benefits of the paid version on my Windows 8.   :)

Hello again :)

To make certain that your code page settings are the cause of this, please set it back to United States (437), but first, create a System Restore point as detailed here.

Now, to change the setting:

  • Open the Region setting (search for it under Settings)
  • Click on the Administrative tab
  • Under Language for non-Unicode programs click on the Change system locale... button
  • Click on the drop down menu under Current system locale: and choose English (United States) then click on OK
  • Click Apply and then click OK in the region dialog window
  • Restart your computer
Next, you'll need to test your scheduled scan to see if it runs. You may need to create a new scheduled scan, depending on whether or not anything is currently displayed in the Starting on column for it or not (assuming that's the cause of all of this as we suspect).

After I had changed the code page settings to 437 (English - United States), I scheduled a quick scan to be done in the next 5 minutes; unfortunately no changes here :

-   "Start on" tab remains empty

-   scan is still ignored

Thanks again for all your help !   :)

OK, let's see if it's perhaps the time format settings affecting this. Please do the following:

  • Open the Region applet under Settings and click on the drop down menu next to Long time: and select h:mm:ss tt (it's currently set to HH:mm:ss)
  • Click on Apply and then click OK
  • Restart your computer and schedule another scan to see if it no functions properly
Let me know if that works or not please.

Looking at the "Check Results" the other day, I explored already this possibility and again today whilst I was under code page 437 (I've set it back to 850 now), but I don't have this option in the drop down menu of the Long time : only HH:mm:ss or H:mm:ss ...

I see. Try the following then please:
  • Open the Region settings again, and this time click on Additional settings...
  • In the dialog that opens, click on the Time tab and configure the options in the following way:
    • Short time: h:mm tt
    • Long time: h:mm:ss tt
    • AM symbol: AM
    • PM symbol: PM
  • Click on Apply then click OK to close that dialog and do the same for the dialog underneath
  • Restart your PC and try scheduling another update
Let me know if it works now or not or if the options were unavailable.

Thanks :)

Well, as mentioned, I don't have the "tt" options ...

Here's what I have :

-   Short time : HH:mm

                       H:mm

                       HH,mm

                       HH' h 'mm

                       HH'h'mm

-   Long time : HH:mm:ss

                       H:mm:ss

-   AM symbol : AM or blank (default)

-   PM symbol : PM or blank (default)

Here the results (same with both code page settings) :

-   scheduled scans are still ignored

-   dates are present in "Start on" tab for future and past tasks (set up in the past but still actual such as updates or my weekly scan) but not for a task beginning today (scheduled scan to be done in 5 minutes).

OK, thanks. I'm stumped unfortunately, but it seems that whatever is preventing you from choosing the h:mm:ss tt and : in your regional/clock settings is likely also breaking the scheduler.

At this point I have to recommend that you contact Support directly so that they can continue to work with you on this as they will most likely be able to come up with other ideas and possible solutions to the issue. If you do decide to contact them, in addition to describing your issue, please also provide them with a link back to this thread so that they know what steps we've already tried in order to fix this problem.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of better help, but hopefully they'll get the issue resolved for you.

I will contact support as soon as possible with a link to this thread. This will be the first time as I never had the slightest problem with this software.

In the meanwhile, thanks a lot for your help and patience ...   :)

You're welcome, I just wish I could have fixed it.

And thank you for your patience. You stuck it out and followed all of my instructions to the letter. Very well done :).

Hello,

Here I'm again with some feedback ('thought it might be of interest to you) as I contacted Support already yesterday.

Here their answer :

"To be honest, I don't have any more ideas than Exile360 our Product Manager, but what I would like to test is if the built in task scheduler in Windows 8 is functioning as it should.

You should be able to schedule mbam.exe to run in the Windows 8 task scheduler.
the mbam.exe path should be here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
Let me know if that can be accomplished and if it works"

And my today's reply :
"I made the test by creating a task to launch mbam.exe within the next 5 minutes through Windows task scheduler and nothing happens (main UI is not opening and no new activity in the task manager) . For your information, I made the same test with several other installed software and that works perfectly (every time the main UI is launched as scheduled). In addition to that, all the other scheduled tasks from other installed applications work without problem.

So, on Windows 8 here, MBAM seems to have a problem (as mentioned in the forum, it always worked perfectly on Win 7)."

That's it up to now; 'waiting for Support's reaction and suggestions ...
