I just purchased the Home version of Malware Bytes & am having some issues.

I went to this thread & followed the instructions & it all seemed to go fine, but I am still having the same issues.

I had no problems running the MBAM Clean program. it only took a couple of seconds & it was done. No problems rebooting or reloading Malware Bytes & no problems entering the code & passwords to get it registered.

the problem that I am having is that I am getting an error message ([open event] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code 2) & it does not put an icon in the tray @ the bottom right hand corner of my computer screen.

If I do the 3 fingered solute, I can see that MBAMGUI is running, which I believe is the program running.

thanks for the help,

Bob

Error Code 2 supposedly means that you have an outdated copy of the protection module. The uninstall/reboot/mbam-clean/reinstall should have fixed that. Try repeating those steps to uninstall, restart your computer, run mbam-clean, and restart again. After that second restart, look in the "Program Files" directory and see of the "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" folder is still there.

I will give that a try.

the "outdated copy of protection module" deffinition of the Error Code 2 does not make sense to me.

I loaded the newest version off of the site, installed it, authenticated it with the passcodes & then went directly back to thier site to see if there were new updates (& it said that I was current).

I will get back with you in a few minutes.

thanks for the help

I did all that & there does not seem to be any hint of Marlware bytes anywhere. I have not loaded anything back on again so if there is anything else you want me to check I can do it.

I suppose I can "search" through the C drive for "Malwarebytes" & see if it finds anything.

One thing I just thought of, I have both ESET, (NOD32-antivirus) & Webroot (spysweeper & Anti Virus) installed on this machine. any time I load anything onto my machine, I dissable both of them so they dont try to stop me from installing it. should I be doing this or not?? would this cause troubles??? Ive been doing this for quite some time, because of an issue I had installing something so my IT dude @ work suggested that I turn them off B4 installing anything.

thanks again for the help.

I dunno, how do I tell???

its a Dell XPS 400 with XP Media Center Edition, I just loaded on SP3 & the handfull of other updates they want with it. P4 CPU, 3.2 GHz, with 1 G of Ram.

thanks again

Bob

OK, then there must be an issues verifying what version of the protection module is installed.

You computer wouldn't happen to be running a 64-bit edition of Windows, would it?

It's not 64-bit. They don't make Media Center in 64 so it must be something else causing the issue. When you disable SpySweeper are you turning it off or are you going through the program and unticking each of it's protections? It might be blocking MBAM by one of it's individual protections being turned on. It's also not a good idea to have two AV's installed at the same time (ESET and SpySweeper with AV). To test, you could try temporarily uninstalling SpySweeper and then installing MBAM to see if it works. Just be sure you have your license info for SpySweeper for when you go to reinstall it.

I am completely shutting down both (ESET & SpySweeper). they give me the "if you do this you wont be protected" messages.

Do you think that the Spy Sweeper would cause the MBAW to give me the error code 2, error message?? would that be logical?? Im not questioning you, just asking a question. Im more of a email & forum guy & want to kick the box when the computer does not work rather than try to solve it with software. LOL.

thanks

It could be if MBAM isn't being able to load it's driver(s) on installation. I know SpySweeper does some pretty low level stuff and it could easily prevent the drivers from installing\functioning properly. To fully disable SpySweeper you have to manually uncheck all the entries under the various Shields, otherwise, even though the program says it's off, it really isn't (I used to work at a couple of big box retailers that shall remain nameless that pushed SpySweeper all day long so we had to know how to deal with it).

thanks, I will give that a try when I get home tonight.

Well..........

I:

Uninstalled MBAM

reboot

cleaned

reboot

Uninstalled Webroot spysweeper

reboot

ran MBAM Clean program (it found nothing)

reboot

Installed MBAM

activated with ID & Key

updated (it was all up to date)

reboot

logged in & ................

same thing. :(

No icon in system tray @ bottom right of screen & after a while, I got the same error code 2.

Im starting to get VERY frustrated with this.

I dont know if it makes any difference or not, but I just turned the computer back on to check in here & looged into our "admin" account (which is where I do all of our updates & whatnot from) & the icon was there in the tray @ the bottom right. It seemed to boot up fine & start up.

I logged off & then back in on my profile & it was not there.

I logged off & then back in on the admin profile & it was not there.

I tried this several times with different profiles & it never came back on.

I am going to try to turn the computer off & then back on again & see if it comes back again.

well..........

I just turned the machine off & then back on again & logged into my account & it seemed to work fine.

I logged out & then back into the admin account & it did not start up.

so, it seems that anytime you boot the machine & log into an account it works fine, if you log out & then back into another account it does not seem to start up properly.

the funny thing is that if you check the "proceses that are running" it seems to be running, but I guess not properly, cause there is no icon & it gives me that error message.

More fun tomorrow.

Exile360,

I just finished doing the SP3 update & all the rest of the "important" updates & the "optional" updates, but did not do any of the "I dont care, but if you want to do them, its good" updates. (or however, they rate them @ Microsoft).

Is that VB6 Runtime update you pointed me to not covered in any of them??

If not I will give it a go, tomorrow evening.

thanks again

Bob

The issue of auto-protect not starting after a logoff and logon was beat up pretty well on another thread. A couple of work around scripts were posted (for admin and limited accounts) that (at least for me) start auto-protect just fine. I recommend that you check the earlier thread out.

Protection Module Turns Off When User logs off..., But not when user reboots or turns off PC

Exile,

I downloaded & installed this & it did not make any difference.

I would like to load my Webroot stuff back on, so my family can use the computer again. Unless you have other suggestions, I will do this tonight.

thanks

Bob

I've got one more possibility that will hopefully fix it. Please try downloading and installing the VB6 Runtime from Microsoft and see if it fixes it. Malwarebytes' depends on some of the files it contains and they may need an update for it to work properly.

Cal,

thanks for the 411. sounds like the same problem Im having. I tried searching for a similar problem, but was not sure what to search on & when I typed in Error I got about a million hits. LOL.

Im hoping that MBAM, comes up with a solution soon. I feel bad cause Im trying to protect our computer so our kids can use it, but they really cant.

I guess if I institute a "MUST reboot" Policy that would be a temp fix for it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm,

thanks

Bob

You guys could try the technique I posted here, but I'm not sure if you're both having the same problem. I'm currently at a loss unfortunately so I would recommend contacting the Malwarebytes' Helpdesk.

exile 360 - yes, your technique posting was in the thread that I suggested that Bobalos look at. Your script works great for me as a batch file when used in an admin account. A slightly more complex cmd script that contains your scrip works for limited accounts. It's all discussed in that same thread.

For now we are just going to restart the computer every time someone wants to get off of the computer so it will start up the software when someone gets online.

I would recommend contacting the Malwarebytes' Helpdesk.

I did & they suggested that I stick with whats going on here on the forum, which is OK with me. as long as I know its being worked on.

On another note, the boys were watching some video this weekend on line & IE hung up. It happened twice on 2 different websites. not sure if they were both using the same media type or not.

any thoughts about that??

thanks

Bob
