Corrupt or Missing Database on Custom Windows 7 Installation

Recommended Posts

I've just finished installing Windows 7 Professional 64-bit several times over on this machine and continually get an error for corrupt or missing database or some such thing, attempt to download a new database and am immediately met with the same error again. If I click cancel to this process, I get the following: "Product files are missing or corrupt. Please reinstall the product." with an error code: "PROGRAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (0, 1812, SDKCreate)."

I believe my issue stems from the nature of this customized installation. I've replaced the original "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" directories on my root drive with mounted junction partitions on a seperate hard disk. Security software seems to have an issue with this configuration, so I created a proprietary directory under my C:\ drive named "Security" and have installed my anti-virus (ESET Smart Security 6) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro in separate directories within it.

I would like to know how this would continue to cause this issue since as far as I know, Malwarebytes stores it's database files under C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\All Users\, neither of which are effected by my directory structure changes.

I would also very much like some help resolving this issue so I can continue using this product, and not be forced to switch to something else.

A screenshot of my C:\ root is attached to aid in understanding the configuration.

I have had no issues whatsoever running any other software but Malwarebytes. It all operates (supposedly) transparently to the OS and to any other programs out there.

Thank you VERY much in advance.

Yes, it appears that the junction points are indeed the issue. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware needs to reside on the same physical drive (not just mapped) as its program data and drivers. I assume that the program works if you install it to a location on the local hard drive itself, is that correct?

That's what I had already tried. I don't necessarily care if it installs into the Program Files directory, so I created a directory at the root of the drive name "Security" and installed mbam in there. The issue remained though. I think I may have figured out what the issue is though... Maybe. I'm working on figuring out how to create the junctions from Windows PE (as I have been doing every time today), while finding a way to maintain the junctioned directories' permissions.

Even with mbam installed in a separate location with none of it's files or other data residing in the junctioned folders, it still has this problem. Permissions would be my next guess. I'll have to work on it more tomorrow, and I'll post here my results.

Ah, I see. Yes, that is odd. If it still does this installed on a local drive, then yeah, I would say you're on the right track with permissions. Also be sure that each time you do this, since you're changing directories between installations, that you run mbam-clean and reboot instead of just uninstalling/reinstalling it normally. It may not help, but it's best not to take chances and eliminate as many variables as possible in trying to track it down and isolate the problem.

Well, I give up. I've installed it every way I can think of, and still it continually corrupts the database.

I've finished installing while maintaining the correct permissions for the program files directories, and as a last resort, I even attempted to install it on a completely separate drive, by itself. Nothing works. Apparently, mbam is just plain incompatible with NTFS 3.0's Junction points. It seems to believe that something is wrong with the computer.

Please let me know if there ends up being a fix for this in the future, as I really enjoy mbam.

But for now, I'm just going to have to let my pro license go to waste and use something that actually works %100 with NTFS 3.0.

Thank you for the assistance.

Did you check permissions on C:\ProgramData? That's where the database itself is stored. If for some reason permissions are odd there, that might be the cause as well.

Hopefully this will be something we'll be able to resolve in a later release. It's hard to say at this point though as I'm as confused as you as to why it's happening. I can't see anything about your configuration that would be causing this. At least nothing obvious that stands out.

Yes I checked the permissions on everything. The only permissions which were in any way even touched from default settings just after install were the Program Files directories. And I mirrored them from the originals when I changed the directories over.

I seriously think it's probably just some aspect of mbam which sees it as an abnormal change, something cause by malware or some such thing, which is why it keeps thinking it's corrupted.

Just a thought. I don't work for your company, nor am I a programmer of any kind, so I can't look into the program's code to try and determine what may be causing the issue.

If you'd like to look more at the problem yourself, you could try setting up a test rig or virtual machine and using junction points for your program files directories. It's a pretty straight forward process, and maybe we could get our answers this way.

And btw, I've given up on not having mbam, I paid for it, I might as well use it. So atm I've reverted my configuration to a standard install with everything on C:\, and mbam is working flawlessly now.

Seriously curious about what exactly causes the red flags on junctions though...

Just thought I would add my experience with this issue. I have my users, and both program files directories symlinkd to another drive. For every othere program I have installed it worked correctly, till I got to malwarebytes. I could not get it to work, kept telling me database was missing etc. I ran across this post http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s=8facec6370de6d2eacdcd2a1768408fa&showtopic=122266&page=2. By following post 26 and 27 and changing the registry entries from C to F for all the keys listed in that registry entry, I was able to install malwarebytes like normal and it updated db and is currently scanning just fine. Hopefully this helps and maybe the malwarebytes team can figure out how to not have the intial issue, since I see this situation coming up more and more with people installing the OS on an SSD drive and having the data moved to a slower HDD.
