start up and repair cmd problem

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am using windows seven and was doing a bootrec /fixmbr and noticed the cmd prompt window in the start and repair section was in an oriental text, could you possibly help me revert it to English please as I have no clue about what this oriental text means, It may as well be Russian as I can not read that either. Ive looked all over the net and can find no relevent anwsers.

Thanks guys

Why are you running that? Does the computer start in either Safe or Normal modes?

If you can run the computer please run this and post back the logs

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

Thanks

Please explain what's going on with this computer. The logs don't look right for a fully installed working computer.

It also shows that you just installed the Operating System little over a week ago.

Install Date: 18/05/2013 22:39:07

Would like to help you but need the bigger picture here of what's going on in order to provide you with better assistance.

Thanks again

Hi sure no problem.

It's windows 7 starter and all updates are applied so I can only assume that's why it looks like a non full version.

The problem is when I insert the OS disk to use the repair computer option and go to use the repair cmd window its in an oriental language not English. I wanted it to display English please.

I have tried to enclose a picture to give you a clearer picture of what I mean but I get an error on the advanced uploader of error IO and on the basic uploader it says cannot display this picture.

I've scanned with mbam and MSE and found nothing so I don't think it's something bad.

Thank you for your kind assistance

Jeff

Looks like Korean.

Somewhere during the Win7 installation process you chose Korean vs. English.

Since Ron found that the OS was recently installed, it shouldn't be an issue to start again a re-install Win7 win an eye to choosing English.

Hi

Yeah it was a complete install twice and I formatted the hard drive both times.

I've Just checked the disk and it is an English version.

I'm a computer novice with a little understanding so excuse me if some of my computer language is not the correct terminology.

Could it be something nasty lurking on this machine?

Thank you David

Hi Advancedsetup

I typed chcp 437 into the cmd interface and it came back with

Active code page: 437

X:\sources>_

and the Korean text still on the surrounding of the box but all English in the bit where you type.

I then restarted the computer and looked at the cmd again and its still all Korean.

The DVD rom disk is only in English,French,German and Italian it's a Windows 7 starter for samsung computers 32 bit.

Thank you Advancedsetup :)

I am not referring to what you found on the 'net. I am referring to what is on the PC of the OS at hand.

If I go to start --> Run

and enter; CMD.EXE

A Command Prompt is opened and will show the current drive and directory. Usually that would be the User's Profile ( C:\users\Login_Name ). So when you ran the the Console CodePage utility, CHCP, and the utility completes it will show the current drive and folder and yours resorts to "X:\sources" which is as curious as the Korean text appearance in the Command Prompt.

Thus I have to ask what is "X:\sources" as it may be pertinent to the problem.

Hi

I'm running the command prompt from the windows dvd when it gives me the Korean text. If I am in the OS and type cmd.exe

its OK I get this

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\PackMule>

Sorry if I am a tad confusing I have basic computer skills no more.

Thank you David

So where did you obtain this DVD? Can you take a picture of it and show it.

The odd thing as David pointed out is that whether or not it's in English or Korean the path prompt is wrong which leads one to believe that it may not be a legitimate Microsoft DVD possibly.

By doing the chcp 437 that should set it to English. But you can't reboot as that will revert it back to the Korean.

See if you can run or do commands on the DVD after your run that command and if they're now in English or not.

Hi Advancedsetup

The DVD Rom is original and an English version, the laptop still has its box and relevant doc's.

By doing chcp 437 yes the text goes to English and commands perform correctly, but as you say on reboot it reverts to Korean, maybe because it is made by Samsung and its it's default language being I think Korean. (just a guess)

The friend I inherited it from left a note saying he used to have it in English but it turned to Korean for an unknown reason thats why I'm trying to turn it back.

Is a permanent command available to revert it to English please.

Thank you for your assistance I do appreciate it very much as I am at a total loss.

I have no idea why this would happen unless the code in the DVD is coded for Korean. If that's the case then the only thing you could do is copy the DVD to a local hard drive, modify the .inf or hive files and then write them back to a new DVD with the boot code. (not an easy task for average user)

Unfortunately not much else you can do with it as the DVD is the one that has it set that way it would seem. Write down the code page change info and print it out and keep a copy with the DVD explaining why it's needed is about all I can suggest without doing as I said above and trying to modify and create your own fixed DVD.

Hi Advancedsetup and David

It is odd I do agree as it used to be in English, the friend I got it from said it just changed to Korean for no reason.

I think I will try to create a new DVD and see how that goes.

I would like to thank you both so much for giving up your time and effort to help me it is very much appreciated indeed.

Thank you both :)
