HitmanPro finds 2 trojans but MBAM shows nothing

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, first post,

I have MBAM, SAS, MSE, & ESET which I use alternately to find and get rid of stuff.

I recently ran HitmanPro (single run) and it came up with a bunch of tracking cookies that were apparently missed(?) by SAS and others.

HitmanPro also found 8 Trojans, 37 Claro objects, and a lot of Babylon and Delta Search objects and a pile of tracking Cookies not found by MBAM or SAS for that matter, and not stopped by MSE.

So, first, how can this be?

Second, how do I fix all this?

Thanks for your reply

Hello and welcome: :)

Short answer: Different types of malware are targeted by different security programs. Example: SAS scans for tracking cookies, MBAM does not.

With today's malware, one needs a layered approach: 1 robust, real-time anti-virus + 1 robust, real-time anti-malware (MBAM) + safe computing practices, etc.

If one does become infected, cleanup for some of today's nasty pests often requires multiple different tools, under expert guidance.

In any event, if you'd like help checking your system, please follow the recommendations in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

A qualified helper will guide you through the scanning and cleanup process.

Thanks,

daledoc1

PS When you say you ran MSE and ESET, I hope that doesn't mean that you have 2 AVs installed on your system? That can lead to conflicts, slowdowns, crashes and DIMINISHED security. Your malware helper can assist you with uninstalling 1 of them. ;)

Hi daledoc1,

Sorry , I didn't mean to imply that I have multiple antivirus running at the same time. Not so.

I only have the Microsoft Security Essentials running full time in background. I use SAS and MBAM and others only as a once every couple of days full scan and seemed to have always been able to keep up with things.

Since nothing is usually reported by these others, including MBAM, I was obviously surprised and a bit dismayed that the single shot HitmanPro displayed so much.

I did not buy HimanPro but had only run the no cost "check only" for verification purposes.as suggested previously by another

troublshooting site.

If these are really there and should, in fact, be removed, I'd like some suggestions on how to do that since the others are not picking these things up.

I have occasionally gone into the register and removed threats before and cleaned regular files and such to get rid of malicious crap.

Thanks again

SAS and MBAM are not anti-virus (AV) applications. They are anti-malware applications that tend to target different types of threats. While it's probably not necessary to have both, it's OK, especially if only one is running in real-time alongside your AV.

I was referring to MSE and ESET. These are both anti-virus programs. It's not good to have them both installed on your system. (If you are referring to the ESET online scanner, that's different.)

Anyway, malware diagnosis and removal is conducted in a dedicated sub-section of the forum or at the help desk. :)

So, to answer your question, if you'd like help running some additional scans to be sure you are clean, please follow the recommendations in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

Your expert helper can also assist you with configuring your system's security setup.

Thanks!

You stated "HitmanPro also found 8 Trojans, 37 Claro objects, and a lot of Babylon and Delta Search objects and a pile of tracking Cookies not found by MBAM or SAS for that matter, and not stopped by MSE."

To be realistic, we'd have to know exactly what those "8 trojans" were. That is the fully qualified path and names to the files deemed to be trojans as well as as the name of the type of trojan those files were identified as.

As for Babylon and Delta Search they are more or less Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) and it depends upon the anti malware company whether they want to include them in their respective targeting. I'm not sure Malwarebytes targets them but, will assist those who need assistance in manually removing them.

I am not familiar with what you call "Claro objects" so I can't comment on them.

As for cookies, they are not really malware and are not targeted by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) in any way shape or form.

Hi, daledoc1,

Just for clarification, I have only MSE as full time active antivirus on my system.

All the others including MBAM are "as needed" only, one time, random uses, every couple days. I do not have an active full time antimalware program running (as yet).

But it is good to know that MSE and MBAM are OK, full time, side by side.

Again thanks

Uh, guys?

Sorry, I did not throw this in above:

What is your opinion of Microsoft Security Essentials as far as to it's capabilities versus some other antivirus programs?

I have been using it from the get-go (many years) and just assumed it was doing an OK job.

Thanks one more time.

In my humble opinion, it is a mid-level capable application. I hold; Avira, Eset and Kaspersky above it and slightly higher or on par with Alwil Avast and Grisoft AVG. MSE is however better than other vendors.

Again this is my personal opinion and is no way to be interpreted as endorsement by Malwarebytes.

Thanks, guys,

I appreciate your quick responses.

I will revert to the Helpline above for the rest.

Catch you later

Thanks, guys,

I appreciate your quick responses.

You are most welcome. :)

FYI, additional recs from one of the forum mods re: AV are here: http://forums.malwar...howtopic=112235

There are so many variables to take into account when selecting an AV (including computer specs/hardware, 3rd-party software, user expertise and computing habits, cost, etc) it's hard to say that one is "best".

I will revert to the Helpline above for the rest.

Sounds like a plan -- the experts at the malware removal forum or help desk will get you checked out and cleaned up.

Best of luck!
