Hello srrsue

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

[*]Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.

    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

[*]Please read every post completely before doing anything.

    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.

[*]Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.

    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt as well.

-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Hi Gringo..thanks for helping me out here ! i clicked on FOLLOW and IMMEDIATE email reply BUT OUR TOPIC IS NOT SHOWING UP FOR ME ..what do I need to do to get so I don't have to go through all the logs to find MINE and respond to you. I followed all your instructions, and one question; when it says to turn off NORTON INTERNET SECURITY, do I just turn OFF my FIREWALL...under NETWORK...or do I have to turn OFF all the different line items under SETTINGS ? After running ADWCLEANAR I got a pop up saying: Failed to connect to a window service. My PC is acting really slow and lethargic in going site to site, When I turn on my PC this morning (I got a chance to run ADWCLEANER last night) and jrt.exe this morning) it appeared that my screen said on startup: CONFIGURING UPDATE: STAGE 3 OF 3 - 0% COMPLETE - DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER. It was stuck on this message for about 5 minutes and then goes to the regular WINDOWS sign in. So that is the STATE OF MY UNION at this point and HERE are the two logs you asked I send you. I will be home today and await your further instructions. thanks gringo !! srrsue wed. 5/15/13 at 9:36 am edst

Hello srrsue

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

<p> <p>Gringo...hi there....everything is STILL AS BAD as my last post above...and keep getting that message that windows update is not working, and stuck again for five minutes on stage 3 of 3...so no noticeable change to slowness, of even launching yahoo.com my home page !!  I also noted that IE gets like a GHOST LIKE SCREEN and an error pops up saying IE has stopped working !  Here is the log.txt you requested and I am standing by to do whatever you tell me needs to be done asap.  thanks,   srrsue   wed. 5/15/2013 at 7:07 pm edst</p>

Your srrsue account was placed on restriction as it looked like a duplicate account. There was no mention of a family member in the same household so when we looked up the IP address and it showed the same that typically indicates that someone is creating multiple accounts for no reason.

I have removed the restriction so you can post with the account now.

Thanks

Hello srrsue

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will let ComboFix run again.

Restart if you have to.

Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  1. report from Combofix
  2. let me know of any problems you may have had
  3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hi Gringo..I did what you asked. Below is the log.txt you requested. As i ran combofix......at COMPLETED STAGE 15, a microsoft error pop up appeared and said: PEV.exe has stopped working - windows checking for a solution to the problem. then in the bottom right of my screen another RED ERROR appeared and it said: windows can't check for updates. The combofix ran until COMPLETED STAGE 50 then this message appeared: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. THIS message then went away..and the log.txt file was created. I saved it to my notepad...and copied and pasted it HERE for you. Thank you for your help Gringo...it seems the Administrator has straightened out my account and sign in and ability to post and respond to you. Let me know what you want me to do next...regards, srrsue wed. 5/15/2013 at 10:37 pm edst

Hello

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)

  • Programs to remove

    • Adobe Reader 8.3.1
      Coupon Printer for Windows
      Java 7 Update 17
      Java SE Runtime Environment 6
      JavaFX 2.1.1

  • Please download and install
Revo Uninstaller FreeDouble click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
when prompted select yes then on next
Once done click Finish.

.

Update Adobe reader

  • Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.
    You can download it from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
  • If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from
here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Clean Out Temp Files

  • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.
    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I see You have MBAM installed on the computer - that is great!! it is a very good program! I would like you to run a quick scan for me now

  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis program
  • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
  • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
  • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
  • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  1. Log From MBAM
  2. report from Hijackthis
  3. let me know of any problems you may have had
  4. How is the computer doing now?

THE PROBLEMS I ENCOUNTERED WERE:

1. I could not find the coupon printer for windows in Revo..but did a search after hitting START and found it there and DELETED IT.

2. IE stopped working, closed and then started up again. This seems to happen a lot over the last few weeks. I updated to IE 8 a short time ago

but still IE 8 continues to CRASH a lot on me....do you suggest I update to IE 9 or IE 10 ?? I have never in my life used anything but IE as my

default browser, so I don't want to get involved with any firefox, chrome et al. Let me know what YOU THINK keeps causing these persistent crashes.

3. I tried to do a WINDOWS UPDATE but got an ERROR MESSAGE advising that recent updates was: NEVER and updates were installed: NEVER - what is

that all about and why after I try to do an update do I get an error message: WINDOWS COULD NOT SEARCH FOR UPDATES - An error occured when

checking for new updates for your compupter. ERROR FOUND: CODE 80070002 - what is this all about and how can that be fixed ? I still am getting

stuck on STARTUP when I get the CONFIGURING UPDATES - STAGE 3 OF 3 - 0% COMPLETE.

thanks Gringo for your continued help and I look forward to your NEXT INSTRUCTIONS. REGARDS and good night, srrsue thurs. 5/16/13 at1:35 am edst

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional

These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QPService] "C:\Program Files\HP\QuickPlay\QPService.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EzPrint] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark 3400 Series\ezprint.exe"

      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
      O4 - Startup: OneNote 2007 Screen Clipper and Launcher.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXE

[*] Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...

[*] Click on the "Fix Checked" button

[*] When completed, close the application.

  • NOTE**You can research each of those lines
>here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brackets and paste into the search space
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the Run ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start

[*]When asked, allow the add/on to be installed

    • close program
    • report to me that nothing was found

  • If threats were found
    • click on "list of threats found"
    • click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop
    • Click on back
    • put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"

Hi Gringo...I removed the TEN uneeded start up items you suggested. I noted that only THREE of the 04's in the Hijack list were NOT in your recommend removal list, namely: lxcymon.exe and lxcycats.exe and WaWiFiMessage ...SO....I didn't know if these three had to go too....or stay. I ran eset and it took close to two hours to run...but no errors noted and I did the uninstall upon closing routine you suggested. I TRIED TO RUN WINDOWS UPDATE and GOT the same error message that I previously told you about above. What do I need to do to fix this problem - I don't understand why my AUTOMATIC update scheme did not take care of this..and the fact it says: never updated really seems strange...is that even possible. I appreciate your continued assistance and await further instructions. regards, srrsue thursday may 16, 2013 at12:51 pm edst

Hi Gringo....I was just talking to my girlfriend and I told her how you were helping me get rid of a virus and malware and told her about how NOW you were helping me try to get window updates working.....she told me her husband had a problem with this last year...and he found it was some kind of corruption with Microsoft silverlight update...I told her how my error 80070002 says I never had an update..ans SHE SAID he had the same thing !! so I looked at my INSTALLED UPDATES and I found my LAST update was the Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 that you had me do TODAY...and then....I have 335 LONG TIME AGO.....and believe it or not MY LAST ONE ON THAT LIST IS: microsoft silverlight on 6/21/2012 !! the next one on the list WAS SECURITY UPDATE FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS KB 2585542 way back on January 21, 2012 !! Could it be possible that MY problem is the same as my friend's husband's ? She said that he said that he DELETED ALL HIS "UPDATES" and rebooted and his worked !! Could that ever work for me, and is it wise to DELETE all these UPDATES on a PC - especially that the 335 that I have go back to January 12, 2010 ?? I know this is wishful thinking that this COULD POSSIBLY WORK FOR ME...but I thought it was worth a shot to bring it to your attention to see if SILVERLIGHT was or is my problem and IF my friend's husband's remedy could work for me ?? Of course you are the expert and can counsel me on whether or not HIS remedy makes any sense !! I'll just wait to hear the next step from you. thanks, srrsue thursday may 16, 2013 aat 6:17 pm edst

  • Copy the following text, and then paste the text into Notepad.

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old

Hi Gringo - I didn't want you to think I had forgotten about you and was not doing what you prescribed - I GOT TO YOUR FIRST STEP....to uninstall MS Silverlight....I used REVO that I had previously used- and MS Silverlight went through the uninstall process...and THEN things got interested when REVO went and told me I had "FOUND LEFTOVER REGISTRY ITEMS" and did I want to "delete" them ? I remembered you previously told me to ONLY remove the BOLD items...well Gringo, there were 21,122 FOUND REGISTRY ITEMS !! Isn't that a "very large number" to be LEFTOVER at any time ? Well, did not want to STOP ....REVO...in the middle of this uninstall...so I CHECKED OFF ALL THE BOLD....and hit Delete...and it said that was successful....so I HIT BACK to see if I had missed ANY bold items..and it seems I DID NOT...and now, there were 18,579 regular line items now !! So I finished that and closed out REVO, then I ran Ccleanre to make sure all that crap was really gone..then I hit Startt---->>> RESTART....and my PC started to shut down and a mireaculous message appeared BEFORE any restart....AND IT WAS ONE I HAD NOT SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME......that message was that UPDATES WERE BEING INSTALLED....and DO NOT SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER !! That was TWO hours ago..and my screen STILL shows a spinning circle and the words: SHUTTING DOWN !! Is it possible in your professional judgment that uninstall of Silverlight worked and now my PC is installing ALL THE UPDATES for MS dating back to January 21st or June 21st of 2012 ?? I am not going to SHUT MY PC DOWN...but I wanted to let you know the CURRENT STATUS of our efforts here. Do you have any idea how many HOURS I need to wait before I contact you again. Thanks for you help and advice from this point. I am not getting a chance to Repair Catroot yet..until the updates finish installing and I look in RECENTLY INSTALLED UPDATES to see my update status !! regards, srrsue friday may 17, 2013 at 1:33 pm edst

Hi Gringo....NO change in status...my PC is stil in the same STUCK SITUATION as I described above, with the same screen that STILL shows a spinning circle and the words: SHUTTING DOWN - we have now reached the 4 Hour 15 Minute mark of this thing trying to shut down...I have given up hope that it is really updating TWO years of updates........so I have to think it is FROZEn. What do I do next so I can get on with doing the REPAIR CATROOT ? Do you suggest I hold down the ON/OFF button on the top of the laptop and make it shutdown or reboot manually by doing so ? Or will the SAFE MODE screen come up..or what ? I look forward to your next instruction. thanks Gringo.....srrsue fri,day 5/17/13 at7:36 pm edst

Hi Gringo..NO CHANGE....NO DIFFERENCE......I first shut my PC down with the power button, it went through the Normal startup by itself...back to the original STAGE 3 OF 3 - 0% complete error message..I looked in INSTALLED UPDATES..and last one was yesterdays ADOBE reader x 10.1.4 - 334 LONG TIME AGO sstill there, last save was on 1/21/2012 - the silverlight update was GONE......I did the REPAIR CATROOT instruction you gave me - and ran the repair.bat from Notepad - a black box popped up and text whizzed by...I then di check for UPDATES...and got the same old, same old ERROR 80070002....I hit restart, and got CONFIGURING JUPDATES...BUT THEN....my PC rebooted by itself in 15 seconds !! then the reboot went through a NORMAL startup...and the Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete error popped up....so nothing has changed at alll Gringo and I guess Repair Catroot did not do the trick. Please tell me what to do next...thanks, srrsue friday 5/17/2013 at 5:01 pm edst
