TROJAN.VUNDO and SECURITY.HIJACK - residual problems - need your help !

Recommended Posts

Hello...I am new to this forum and would appreciate your help. I ran Malewarebytes and found the 3 problems: two trojan.vundo and one security.hijack and they were all quarantined, BUT I BELIEVE I am still noticing RESIDUAL EFFECTS of these three instances of malware that I first encountered on April 6, 2013 I ran Malewarebytes AGAIN and the full scan shows no malicious items detected this time . I need your help since performance of my desktop PC seems to be deteriortating. Please let me know what I should do next. I have "dds" and "attach" on my desktop and am attaching them below and await your professional guidance help and instructions. Thank you very much.

OK...That appears clean..Next:

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

MrC - second scan finished and again it says: Scan finished: No malware found ! I cannot tell if I HAVE ANY CONTINUING PROBLEMS...unless you give me the go ahead to close all the notepads and THIS forum page and reboot...and then try the THREE THINGS you mentioned above. I await your next instruction and whether or not MY PC IS CLEANED UP AND FIXED...or whether I need to do something else to help you ascertain the status of my system...or do I need to run fixdamage.exe just to be sure ? Let me know. thanks, yosoy4ever monday may 13, 2013 at 9:36 pm edst

Hi MrC - I am NOW responding to you on my LAPTOP as I ran combo fix...and it said it was generating a report to: c:combofix.txt......THEN .....i went in and TRIED TO launch IE8 to send you the .txt log(s) and I got TWO error messages that DID NOT allow me to sign on to the internet. (By the way, when I disabled my Norton Internet Security I did it for FIVE HOURS - and my desktop is still plugged in to the internet via my 2Wire - Uverse modem - should I unplug the modem NOW ?) The two error messages were: c:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe ILLEGAL OPERATION ATTEMPTED ON A REGISTRY KEY THAT HAS BEEN MARKED FOR DELETION .....and the other was: C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine64\20.3.1.22\Uistub.exe UNSPECIFIED ERROR. What do I do next and what do I need to do to be able to connect to IE on my desktop computer so that I can forward you the combofix .txt file{s} ?? Also, how am I able to get back into my NIS to enable all t he firewall settings that combofix told me to disable ? I will be waiting by my LAPTOP for further help. thanks, yosoy4ever tuesday may 14 2013 at 10:57 am edst

Hello MrC - sorry for that error on my part, it skipped my mind as I was afraid to touch any keys until the system told me so...in any event, I am happy to report that I RESTARTED by desktop computer....and am NOW responding direct from my desktop computer ......and that seemed to do the trick to let me get into IE to send you the .txt file(s) and to get into my NIS and enable all the firewalls that I had disabled previously to running combofix. The .txt file(s) are attached, and I await your FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS AND DIRECTIONS

Looks OK.....

Lets check for any adware while you're here:

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :

· Adwares (software ads)

· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)

· Toolbars

· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion method. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

  1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  2. Now click on the Search tab.
  3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Note:

Please look over what was found......especially any folders, we're going to permanently delete it all in the next step....if there's something you may want to keep...please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

If you see AVG Secure Search being targeted for deletion, Here's Why and Here. You can always Reinstall it.

Please note that Antivir Webguard uses ASK Toolbar as part of its web security. If you remove ASK by using Adwcleaner, Antivir Webguard will no longer work properly. Therefore, if you use this program please use the instructions below to access the options screen where you should enable /DisableAskDetections before using AdwCleaner.

You can click on the question mark (?) in the upper left corner of the program and then click on Options. You will then be presented with a dialog where you can disable various detections. These options are described below:

/DisableAskDetection - This option disables Ask Toolbar detection.

Hello MrC - I ran the Adwcleaner and saw SIX (6) folders and did not recognize any of them and are surely something I do not need to keep if you deem it good to get rid of them. Here is the .txt file and I await your further instructions. Thanks, yosoy4ever Tuesday May 14 2013 @ 11:53 am edst

Lots of adware found....lets clear it out.....

  1. Please re-run AdwCleaner
  2. Click on Delete button.
  3. Confirm each time with OK if asked.
  4. Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.

Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Then......

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!

Out dated programs on the system are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Java 7 Update 17 <----please update, should be Update 21
Java version out of Date! <--------Go to control panel > Java > Update Tab > Update Now
Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!! and any other free "stuff".
If there's no update tab in Java, uninstall it and Download and install the latest version from Here
Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!! and any other free "stuff".
-----------------------------
Adobe Reader 10.1.6 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---please check for an update if available or uninstall and download and install Foxit Reader which is less vulnerable to malware and much better than Adobe. Don't install any toolbars that may come with it (ASK Toolbar).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)

---------------------------------

If you used DeFogger to disable your CD Emulation drivers, please re-enable them.

-------------------------------

Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com

http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe

Save it to your desktop.

Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)

Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.

IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

-------------------------------

Any questions...please post back.

Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.

Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC

Hi MrC - I just got a chance to complete ALL of your instructions above....and cleared all the tools and logs and programs you presented to me to make use of in this malware clean up of my desktop computer ...and I thank you immensely for working with me on this. I just have THREE observations that I thought I should bring to your attention that happened AFTER I did all your instructions above: First, I read your "MY PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE" notes...and decided to create a SYSTEM RESTORE and SAVED only the last RESTORE...so that I would not have any of the OLD restores in my files BACK WHEN I had the "bad stuff" you helped me remove from my pc. After it said that a new restore point had been established...I restarted my PC and an ERROR MESSAGE popped up on my screen, and I didn't know what to make of it: it said: GET DEFAULT BROWSER ERROR: 122 ?? is this indicative of any problem for me and are you aware of what 122 means ? My pc then went to my homepage, which is yahoo.com after I clicked on OK to make the error pop up go away. It took about 15 seconds to get to my homepage, whereas it usually takes about 5 seconds...I am using AT&T Uverse at 12 mpbs - so I just wanted to know if anything seems strange here to you ? Obviously it will take a little bit of time for me to see if there is a discernible difference in the performance of my PC...so I cannot comment on that just yet. The third thing I did immediately after getting to my homepage without any further incidents, I ran my Norton Utilities to "clean my disks" and here is the LOG below that was created for your review. I did NOT do any searches or anything ...my home page just came up and I ran the clean disk...so I don't understand PC's enough to know if this "population of files" is normal or not or indicative of some OTHER problem. In reading through the line items.it seems there were A LOT of IE5 low content under Internet Explorer...and I don't know if that is usual or not, so I thought I would bring it to your attention to see if this is indicative of anything out of the ordinary or anything I have to watch for or do anything further ? My wife watched with interest as I followed all your instructions, and she is going to be contacting someone at Malewarebytes.org soon to HELP HER with her laptop that she told me seems to be DRAGGING and she believes might be infected with some maleware too ! So MrC please let me know what you think of these THREE comments, and if I need to DO ANYTHING ELSE, and thank you very much for your continued assistance. yosoy4ever tuesday 5/14/2013 at 3:36 pm edst

OK......thanks MrC - my pc is still acting what I believe is slow, perhaps my 12 mbps at AT & T Uverse isp is not really fast......I am borderline distance from their CONTROL BOX and they don't want me to upgrade to 18 mbps or 25 mbps until NEW TECHNOLOGY can give me a BETTER signal. One final question is that I am using NIS 2012 and Norton Utilities and Ccleaner and Tune Up 1-Click maintenance as well as daily cleaning of my cache, as I continue to see a large number of IE temporary files build up throughout the day, EVEN IF I AM NOT ON LINE and going to different websites. Do you agree I should CONTINUE using all of these TOOLS to keep my PC in efficient operating condition, or do you suggest I delete any of them ? In the last day, NIS notified me that THEY believe that Malewarebytes that I stilll have installed is CONFLICTING with NIS and they are ADVISING ME to uninstall malewarebytes. Do you agree ? I thank you for taking me this far along the path to RECOVERY AND EFFICIENT OPERATION of my PC - I really appreciate your efforts. Once my wife completes her work on RIDDING her PC with the help of another Malewarebytes expert - we intend to make a contribution via PayPal that we will sign up for. Is there a way to direct our Contribution directly to you and her expert, or is it all thrown into a pot for all of you to share ? Let me know, and thanks again.

I really can't help you with that.

Norton Utilities and and Tune Up 1-Click I'm not familiar with. I use CCleaner.

Norton 2012 I assume you paid for, it's know to be a resource hog and may be a reason for a slow computer. There's a lot of free anti-virus programs out there, coupled with Malwarebytes Pro, will do a good job protecting your computer.

MB is compatible with most anti-virus programs

You can set exclusions similar to these to prevent any conflicts between them:

There's a PayPal button at the bottom of most "Helper" posts, clicking on that will allow you to directly contribute to your helper.
