slow computer--possible malware?

Hi,

I've been having issues with my computer running very slow lately. It is an old comp, but this came on very suddenly, so I'm a bit concerned that some sort of malware may be responsible. I've got the free version of MBAM, and that scan didn't detect anything. I've also run a scan with HijackThis (I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether anything that reported is actually bad), and with the dds program you recommended in the "I'm infected, now what do I do?" topic. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

Confirm each time with Ok.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.

Hello MotherOfDragons

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

I ran ComboFix and didn't have any problems with it (I didn't get the error you mentioned in your Note 2 or anything like that), and it appears to have found and successfully fixed one infected file. My computer is still running slow, though (about the same as it was after running AdwCleaner and JRT).

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Running ComboFix this time, a message popped up partway through saying, "PEV.exe encountered a problem and needs to close." (I did remember to disable my anti-virus and firewall before running ComboFix, and I did drag-and-drop that script you posted onto ComboFix before running it. There was also a new version of ComboFix available, so I allowed it to update.) Despite that, ComboFix appears to have completed successfully, and didn't find anything this time. The computer is still running slow--but if ComboFix didn't find anything, I guess that means it's not due to malware after all?
