Successfully blocked... Skype?

Recommended Posts

So, I do a lot of voice chatting on Skype, and recently I've been noticing that my mouse will change to a little loading symbol for absolutely no reason, with no other programs running. It made me nervous but I ignored it the couple times it happened. Let it be noted that I don't usually have my active file protection and website blocking turned on. Suddenly, last night, with no warning and again with not a single other program open, I heard a Home Depot advertisement clear as day through my headset. I was somewhat freaking out, so I started a scan on Malwarebytes and before the scan was even one-fourth of the way finished, I heard another random advertisement (can't recall the advertiser). I aborted the scan, turned on my file and website protection, and restarted the scan. The scan came back perfectly clean and I had no more issues for the rest of the night. I figured Skype just decided to throw some obnoxious advertisements into their service. However, today, roughly 20 minutes ago, Malwarebytes popped up and said that it blocked Skype from connecting to a potentially malicious website. I regret not copying down the IP address.

I'm not sure what I should do about this. I've always had full faith in Malwarebytes' scans but I don't particularly feel like it's finding everything it should be (probably my fault because I don't keep my shields up like I should).

Hello and welcome, Helifano: :)

I don't personally use Skype.

Until an MBAM staffer or member familiar with Skype arrives...

IP blocks are to be expected when running Skype.

This KB topic explains what it means and how to safely deal with the blocks: Why does Malwarebytes Anti-Malware block Skype?

FWIW, I'm not sure why one would NOT enable real-time active file protection or website blocking??? :o

They are the primary means of providing real-time, pro-active protection to your system to prevent infections (alongside your active anti-virus).

Disabling those features largely defeats the purpose of having MBAM PRO. :(

If the IP blocks are inconvenient when using Skype, the KB topic linked above explains how to safely disable the popup balloons without disabling the IP blocking module.

Please let us know if you need further assistance with this.

OTOH, if you think you might be infected, then please start with the recommendations in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

An expert will assist you with looking into it.

Thanks,
