MBAM PRO Slows Computer?

Recommended Posts

i've been using the free version of mbam for many moons, can't live without it, but i recently decided to upgrade to pro, thought it would compliment my new machine purchase and new os, w8p with windows defender. but after upgrading to pro and ticking on most of the premium security options, my system's performance dropped significantly, both in terms of surfing the net and routine desktop work. i just now removed all of the "pro" settings, in effect turning it into freeware again, and my system is once again snappy/quick as ever. i played around with different "pro" setting combos but whatever i tried seemed to yield the same results, a plodding machine. so is there a secret settings combo for the pro version which will not impact my system's performance?

worth noting, before i upgraded to pro the "windows defender" on my system crashed due to an ms update bug, which effected a lot of users, windows defender simply would not load. i had planned to upgrade to mbam pro anyway but, after defender crashed, i got right on it. with defender down, and mbam pro installed, everything was fine, didn't even notice it was running in the background, protecting my system. but once i got windows defender up and running again, along with mbam, things went south in terms of my system's performance. as such i'm left with notion that mbam pro and windows defender don't play well together when both are running in the background, doing their thing, despite what i read to the contrary. btw i removed mbam entirely from my system before repairing windows defender, as suggested by ms (actually ms recommends removing any av software that might be installed, i removed mbam just to be safe). if anyone has some suggestions on how to make mbam pro work without a drop in system performance, and without disabling windows defender, please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

one last thing - even if i end up having to use what would in effect be the free version of mbam, i.e. if i can't use the premium settings successfully, i have absolutely no problem having dropped the $25 on the pro version - in fact i'm a bit ashamed that i didn't find a way to donate this amount to mbam a long time ago given how often i used their great freeware over the years.

You may try setting exclusions to see if it helps...

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

For Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware \ mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.
