Hello RetiredTech and Welcome to Malwarebytes

We need to get a bit more information about your system in order to be able to possibly assist you.

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

Please try going to this Microsoft FixIT site and try some of the top solution fixes

http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically

Fix Windows Desktop Search when it crashes or not showing results

Fix Windows Media Player video, and other media or library issues

Then reboot and let us know if that was able to correct it or not.

Ron,

I used the fixit programs for the 3 areas you recommended. I rebooted after the first fix and tried again. Same issues with the picture change. After each fixit was finished, I rebooted and tested again but no luck. Still happening after runing fixit on all of them.

I think I will try using my laptop to see if I can change my profile. It is also a Win7 machine but only recently was upgraded with a clean install. I don't have much loaded on that comupter either. I will let you know as soon as I finish the test.

Ron,

I get the same exact results when using the laptop to change the picture in my profile. The name appears above and to the right of the "Choose File" button but "Failed to set a new photo" appears in the purple box below. I have tried this with Chrome, Firefox and IE 9 with the same results.

Guest ITboss

Please try creating a new profile on the computer and see if you're still getting that error.

Ron,

I am now logged on as ITboss (my new profile) and I am having the exact same issue. I cannot load a picture from my computer or LAN. I have tried several different pictures with larger and smaller sizes but it still will not load.

OK, I think Ron was thinking the latter, but as soon as he returns he will check into that, I do not have access to board settings to see if something is up with change profile pictures...

I did change mine, and I used a png, gif, jpg and was able to do it.

The steps I took....

1. Click on my Profle

2. Click on Edit my Profile

3. Click on Change your photo....

4. Select Use a custom photo

5. Click Browse...

6. Browse to the photo you want to use and select Open

7. Select Done

Step 5 button on my screen says "Choose File" and after choosing the file the name shows above and to the left of the button. However, there is a purple box below that says :Failed to set a new photo.

Do you think this application uses Javascript to accomplish the fetch of the photo from the local drive? If so could the Java version make a difference?

It doesn't use Java as far as I know (I don't have Java installed on my system). I think Firefox is onto something with trying a different browser, particularly if you're currently using Internet Explorer 10 as I know it has issues with this forum.

It may also have something to do with the formatting of the picture, such as the file size and/or dimensions but I'm not sure.

I am not sure if it uses java or not, as I am not on the MBAM staff, I am not sure what coding they are using on the board... Have you tried using a different browser?

From #6 above, I have tried Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m, Firefox v20.01 and IE9 v9.0.8112.16421

I am having a problem placing a local picture in my Profile. Each time it comes back with the following message: "Failed to set a new photo".

Photo is .jpg (I also tried .png) and is 684x684 pixels, 109 Kbytes

Any suggestions?

Either use GRAVATAR.COM (free service)...

A Globally Recognized Avatar

Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?

...or submit a .jpg, .png, or .gif of less than 100K (=< 99K) here on MBAM and see if one or the other helps. It may be that 100K+ in size is beyond the system's auto-size capabilities.

I use a 200 x 190 that's about 22.7K and the system sizes it to fit.

YMMV,

HTH,

Steve
