post-malware, terrible internet speeds

Recommended Posts

Hello to all,

Let me share my tale of woe, in the hopes that generous people much smarter than I am can help me.

Background: I'm on a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP home edition v 2002. My ISP is Comcast broadband. My wife is on the same service and has no problem, so I know the problem is with my machine.

It all started on 5 March. On that evening, my computer came down with the Spyware Protect 2009 malware. I recognized it as spyware immediately and ran Ad-Aware and McAfee antivirus, neither of which did the trick. So, I followed the directions found here: http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-spyware-protect-2009.html - I killed the processes, deleted the registry entries, and deleted the files. Still no good. So, I downloaded and installed malawarebytes. That seemed to do the trick. All was fine!

I decided to make sure all my anti-malware and anti-virus software was up-to-date, which is all is, and ran full scans on all of them. Nothing came up. I ran Security Task Manager but again found nothing. Everything seemed fine.

Then, a day or two ago, my internet connection went down the drain. Speeds are abysmally low and I frequently lose my connection. Using gmail and g-chat, for example, are nearly impossible as the connection is constantly up and down (mostly down). It's almost unusable; I feel like I've gone back in time to 1995 and am trying to play Warcraft II on a 28k modem. Again, my wife's connection is working fine, so I know it's me.

I re-ran McAfee and Malwarebytes but found nothing. I ran Spybot Search & Destroy, which was perhaps a mistake - it found no malware but constantly identifies registry changes if turned on; I have no idea what this means. I ran winsock xp fix in the event that I had messed up my registry in my foolish attempts to fix things myself. Still nothing. What do I do? Please help. If I need to reformat and reinstall Windows, tell me - but be gentle. I will be tremendously grateful.

Thanks,

Andy

Here's my HJT log:

Acrobat Reader 9.0 and under have exploited code, please remove and update to 9.1

Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update

Adobe Reader 6.0.1

All of these versions of Java have old exploited code. Please remove all of them and update to 6 build 12 if you want

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Once the Peer2Peer software has been removed we can proceed..

Hello,

I removed BitTorrent, DNA, and Limewire.

I removed Acrobat Reader and installed v 9.1.

I removed Java and ran JavaRa; my log is below. I deleted all of the Java folders I found. I have not yet installed the newest version, so now I hopefully have no Java on my machine.

I'm ready and happy to proceed at your convenience. Thank you again for your time and help.

Best,

Andrew
