It started out very random but has gotten incresingly more frequent.

SYMPTOMS:

  1. BSoD after running any extensive multimedia programs (Music, Games, Youtube Videos, etc.)
  2. BSoD: DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
  3. MS Knowledge Base says the cause is a USB driver and offers a Fix, but the Fix does nothing
  4. Reboot computer and it hangs just after the POST (just before WinXP LogIn Screen shows up)

My work-around has been to turn off all external USB devices and see what is causing the hang-up. To my suprise I noticed that if I turn off my Focusrite Firewire Audio Interface before booting up the computer it starts up fine. I'm under the impression that this error has something to do with my firewire card and my audio interface.

Also noticed while watching Youtube videos, scrolling the screen while the video is playing causes the audio to become garbled and out of sync with the video. This also happens if audio is playing (WMP) while browsing the web. My interface has a light on the front that indicates when the firewire is connected. It periodicly blinks when audio is out of sync.

I haven't changed my setup for a long time so everything is as it has always been and it all worked fine.

Please, any assistance in this matter would be great

Thank you in advance.

  • Root Admin

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

Do you have a Focusrite audio device? It looks like the Saffire.sys driver might be part of the issue, or it could be that it's just there in the stack.

You might try uninstalling the software and disconnecting the hardware - then see how the system runs at that point. If all appears okay then get the latest drivers and reinstall it.

I did what you said:

I uninstalled the software, disconnected the hardware, and the computer booted into Windows normal. I downloaded the latest software from Focusrite's web site and installed. I reconnected the hardware and everything worked fine. Then I tried to go on Youtube and the system BSoD with the same error message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Read all of this reference from Microsoft. There are several more things for you to check out.

This error usually occurs after the installation of a buggy device driver, system service, or BIOS. To resolve it quickly, restart your computer, and press F8 at the character-mode menu that displays the operating system choices. At the resulting Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu, choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time. If you encounter this error while upgrading from Windows NT 4.0 or earlier, it might be caused by a device driver, a system service, a virus scanner, or a backup tool that is incompatible with the new version. If possible, remove all third-party device drivers and system services and disable any virus scanners prior to upgrading. Contact the software manufacturers to obtain updates of these tools. For additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error, check the System Log in Event Viewer. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve this error. You should also run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer, especially the memory scanner. For details on these procedures, see the owners manual for your computer. If your system has small computer system interface (SCSI) adapters, contact the adapter manufacturer to obtain updated Windows 2000 drivers. Disable sync negotiation in the SCSI BIOS, check the cables and the SCSI IDs of each device, and confirm proper termination. For enhanced integrated device electronics (EIDE) devices, define the onboard EIDE port as Primary only. Also, check each EIDE device for the proper master/slave/stand-alone setting. Remove all EIDE devices except for hard disks. If the message appears during an installation of Windows 2000, make sure that the computer and all installed peripherals are listed on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) on http://www.microsoft.com. For more troubleshooting information about this Stop message, refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/support.

cf. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms854226.aspx

Disregard the references to the specific versions of Windows. The notes apply to all modern versions of Windows {ie, they apply to Windows XP and later versions.).

Actually what I wanted you to do is uninstall the software completely and remove the hardware.

Then go online and see if Youtube and other audio/video sites work or not. With the hardware removed and the software removed if the issue continues then you know you probably have some other conflict or driver/hardware issue going on.

Since your previous post I've turned the Focusrite Saffire off (the drivers and software are still installed). I've bypassed all audio to my internal sound card. The system is running fine and Youtube videos play without interuption. The problem is, this computer is used in my studio setup to produce and record music, so I need my audio interface to work.

I'm thinking back to about two months ago when a static discharge (carpeted room!) caused the system to shut off completely. That may have something to do with it. But the system was stable right after that. Could it be the firewire card is malfunctioning?

It sounds to me like you need a dedicated system to perform the Focusrite Saffire function and it should be limited to that scope of operation. Software not associated to that role may be contraindicated. Internet access may need to be performed on a separate system but share data via a NT Share or Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.

Is the "Focusrite Firewire Audio Interface" a PCI card in the PC ?

What model(s) of Focusrite products are you using ?

I sometimes use the internet to download samples and I need my recording rig to be connected to the internet. I don't have a second rig to use for internet only.

Is the "Focusrite Firewire Audio Interface" a PCI card in the PC ?

It's a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 Firewire Audio Interface connected via firewire cable to a PCI Firewire card.

What model(s) of Focusrite products are you using ?

Focusrite Saffire Pro40

In light of your suggestion I think I need to rethink how I have my rig set up. I could use my laptop to download internet content and filter it to my desktop for further processing. That may be how I'll set up my next rig.

Yes, I do suggest you re-examine the role the platform plays. I saw; BitTorrent, Multiple Games like Doom and Final Fantasy VII, Yahoo IM and Toolbar, CouponBar, etc., etc.

I am a strong believer in the "Chaos and Complex Systems in a Computing Platform" postulate. Which basically means that as your move a given OS away from Plain Jane (an OS that is a new installation with Service Packs with no modifications and no applications) the greater the propensity there is for "chaos" to be introduced into the computing system.

I see some good business software and audio modification software like Cake Walk, Adobe Premier and PhotoShop so I grasp what you are doing. However you are using it in a willy nilly fashion as shown by multiple toolbars, games and BitTorrent.

I see you have multiple hard disks. One idea is to use a removable Drive Bay for the "C:" drive. When you use the PC in a business role you insert the hard disk of an OS that is dedicated for the business function. When you are in a non-business mode you shutdown the PC and swap the removable "C:" drive for an OS where you can have all the bells and whistles and "fun" games. The Dell Latitude notebook I am writing this reply on has Vista Business on the presently inserted hard disk. However I have another drive with WinXP and third drive with Win7/64. All are "imaged" so if something goes wrong I can restore an image of the OS that will bring it back to a working condition.

I don't really think a removable hard disk using two hard disk cages representing the two separate roles is your best option but it is something to think about. I'd rather you get a second computer where one is dedicated to the "business model".

Now is a good time to think about it because WinXP is reaching its End of Life (EoL) so you want to be prepared to use the Safire Pro 40 in conjunction with a newer OS like Win7 or Win8 dedicated to the role.

Safire Pro 40

I took a good look at that device. It's REAL nice. I know some tapers who would like that kind of system. :P

What I'd like for you to do is disconnect the Firewire cable from the Firewire port on the back of the WinXP PC.

Then...

Right-Click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage" then go to "Device Manager"

Find the Firewire/IEEE 1394 device as seen in the below graphic.

post-14644-0-71779000-1365562616.jpg

Right-Click on it and choose "Uninstall".

Then shutdown the computer.

Open up the chassis and move the PCI Firewire card to a different slot

Close up the chassis and reboot the computer. WinXP will Plug 'n Play the Firewire device. After that is done you can reconnect the Firewire cable to the back of the PC.

I'm not sure it will fix the problem but I am hoping the Saffire.sys driver (which is what crashed) will look at the reconfigured Firewire hardware differently and hopefully not crash.

i tend to agree with david ...

maaannny years ago the "use yer pc as a recording studio and midi controller/sequencer" crowd had problems with (for lack of better terms) "too many cooks adding to the broth" .

what jogged my memory on this was the mention of "cakewalk" .

a couple of guys were having severe BSOD problems ... right in the middle of a performance (naturally) !

other guys had the exact same machines (selection was limited back then) and had no problems to speak of .

the difference was that their "performance machines" (sequencer/controller) were pretty much just that ... the other "stuff" was done on a separate machine .

i will allow that comps and programs have come a long way since that time but there are certain premises that still hold truth .

i certainly would hope that your problem can be resolved without resorting to a "second machine" .

to my notion , getting all of the stuff you have to "play nice with each other" will (sometimes) result in an unstable house of cards .

First, let me thank you guys for taking the time to address my issues.

@David Lipman: I did everything as illustrated in your reply. Unfortunately, the Saffire Pro40 still is not handling the internet like it should. Let's just say that the Saffire Pro40 and Youtube are not close friends at this point. I barely had room to move the firewire card to a new slot because my Radeon 4650 is in the way of one of them; and I only have three.

@CWB: I agree with everything you guys are saying and I think it's time to knuckle down and tell myself that I need a dedicated rig for music. As you can see, I'm kind of a Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to my computer usage, but a dedicated system would keep down on all the downtime from errors and crashes. In the long run it would save me some money, too.

So, again, I thank you for all your time and patience in addressing this post.

Thank you Advanced Setup, David Lipman, and CWB. If you guys come up with anything else to try, by all means, feel free to let me know. I'm willing to resolve this if it can be resolved.
