Hi all,

I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

I'm using WinXP professional all patched up correctly.

Avast, free version.

malwarebytes free version.

I use a mail program to check my emails.

A few days ago I had signed up to a mailing list with one of my yahoo email addresses. It was to be notified about when a dvd box set would be released. The company website is reputable as the leading name in re-producing older tv shows.

Since I added that email address to the mailing list I've had some strange things happen with my email address'es.

First the email address that I had entered in to the mailing list I suddenly started recieving mail failures, even though I personally wasnt sending any emails. When I looked at the mail failures emails via the properties tab of the email (without opening the actual email), I could see that it was a spam email as it just contained a fake obvious virus web link. But what had happened is they had emailed the email back to me, plus added some of my friends emails in the CC part. Not all of the emails addresses were real. But some were. So I thought my email account must have been hacked. I changed the password on that account, and my other yahoo account (which it had sent an email to that one too).

I did a full scan with both Avast and that came up clean. Then I did a full scan with malwarebytes. That came up clean.

So I'm not actually sure what happened. What else do people recommend?

Any advice is helpful.

Hi,

Next, please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  4. Click Start
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.
