Database optimization: what is it?

I mean other than "optimizing" the database. Are the same number of threats detected by MBAM preserved with each database optimization or do the numbers of threats decrease at all?

I'm seeing mention of database optimization happening in the News forum and I've seen changes in the numbers of objects contained in any given database update on various MBAM installations I update. I just haven't found a description of what the database optimization does.

New methods are sometimes found that can deal with a class of infections that previously took multiple calls. The old method will be removed which helps to improve performance and size.
