Hi,

I changed the prefs.js file, deleted registry entries etc, but it keeps coming back. Want my machine truly clean; please help
The main problem lies in the %firefoxprofile%\user.js file and not the prefs.js file. The user.js file is not present by default anyway, so if you didn't create it, then delete it. If you did create it, then manually edit the file.

Also see here for more info.

Whatever is present in the prefs.js file can be changed easily via the Firefox settings.

Btw, your log looks OK :)

Same problem as all the rest of the fixes though. I deleted user.js, but it just comes back each time the browser is launched! Even cleaned up prefs.js after deleting user.js, and still when Firefox launched it re-established user.js and modified prefs.js again.

So something is still present. Any help very appreciated

Also, in addition to those two things, deleted 'Yoog Search.xml' from searchplugins folder. Still, upon re-starting browser all 3 things return

Hi,

It's a component in Firefox that is still installed which is causing it, so look in the following folder:

c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox\components\

The file could be named nsBrowserOpt.dll or nsadsoftinc.dll, could be another one already, or just a random one. In most cases, it will start with ns****.dll.

I cannot tell you since logs won't show anything related with Firefox. If you find it, let me know and upload here

In anyway, if you perform a clean install of Firefox, the installer should be gone anyway. A clean install is... uninstall Firefox, then delete the Firefox profile folder (where user.js and prefs.js is located) and the Mozilla Firefox folder present in your Program Files.

Then reinstall your Firefox again. You can backup your bookmarks.htm first before uninstalling and deleting Firefox.

There are no ns*.dll's, only browserdirprovider and brswrcmp

There are many ns*.js's, as seen in attached screenshot

As I said, it could be a newer variant already - previous ones started with ns... new variant can be different.

Please uninstall Firefox and delete its related folders. See here how to do this:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Please make sure you do this correctly, because uninstalling Firefox doesn't remove its related folders, that's why you should delete them manually afterwards.

This means, the folders:

C:\Program files\Mozilla Firefox

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox <== if exists

Once these folders are really gone, redownload Firefox (yes, redownload and don't use an older installer) and install it again.

Well those are all of them....

Uninstall is going to be hard for me, will lose valuable sessions, not to mention add ons and such. Am a bretty big browser user (SaaS apps, etc). Would strongly prefer finding this .dll, if that's really all that's left to fix

If there's still a dll present...

What does the user.js contain?

user_pref("google.toolbar.linkdoctor.enabled", false);

user_pref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Yoog Search");

user_pref("browser.search.defaulturl", "http://www7.yoog.com/search.php?q=");

user_pref("browser.search.selectedEngine", "Yoog Search");

user_pref("keyword.URL", "http://www7.yoog.com/search.php?q=");

user_pref("keyword.enabled", true);

Ok, see my previous post.

In anyway, the user.js file should be deleted. Make sure your Firefox is closed when you delete the user.js file. But rename that other dll I mentioned first before you delete the user.js file.

Don't mind trying that, but note its time stamp. The problem definitely started yesterday.....
Don't count on time stamps.

And that, my friend, *appears* to have done it. Many, many thanks.

Let me know if I can provide any more info, this prob is all over the web and no good solutions show up in search engines....
