Vista infected with PUM.UserWLoad + TrojanRansom (as detected by Malwarebytes)

Recommended Posts

Hi, This is a new post for me but isn't new for all of you; it seems like many people are experiencing

the same PUM.UserWLoad + Trojan.Ransom problem.

I'm on an HP running Vista. Last week I did an updated Malwarebytes scan and nothing came up. I have

two firewalls running and I have not had any malware, etc. for more than a year.

Two evenings ago however I found the PUM + Trojan.Ransom.

I have looked online some but decided this was the best option.

I can find the registry for the sucker at HKCU\Softeware\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows|Load

and the 'data' for it is C:\Uders\HP_User\Locals~1\Temp\mslaaicx.com.

However, I can't erase the registry just like Malwarebytes can't. I know there are also exe and/or dll files that need to be erased, but don't know

which to erase.

I appreciate all of the help you can give me. It seems looking at the other threads that you have been able

to help others with the same problem.

Thanks much in advance,

M&M

I ran a full search (1+ hours) last night of MalwareBytes, updated version, and found the PUM, the Trojan.ransom

and a java-related malware bug hiding around. I was able to delete the third (java) one, but the PUM.UserWLoad and Trojan.r

are still there.

Also, an interesting thing is that when I have restarted the computer after doing Malwarebytes scans (did it in normal mode

a couple of times and safe mode once) you can actually see this @#$%@ bug at the bottom in the task bar... it has a 'bar' (I don't

know what else to call it) that looks like it's black screen with white text... command prompt type stuff... and its name is the C:\Users\

HP_Users\... whatever. It doesn't hide very well if it's visible somehow lol. But it disappears in a few seconds.

btw, here is the most recent MalwareBytes quick search (with updated info; not out of date) log:

Boy, am I glad to hear from you. Thanks very much in advance for all of your help. I'm working on some

IP (legal term, not DSL, etc. term) and two start-up businesses related to it. I have been thankful for the free Malwarebytes scans for

more than a year now... and now this online help. I want to make a mega donation in the near future!!! no joke. Great program

and great service(s).

Here is the DDS.txt text and Attach.txt text in order.

I will copy and paste the Roguekiller diagnostic text in the next reply box.

First of all........

¤¤¤ Infection : ZeroAccess ¤¤¤

Please read the following information first.

You're infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess, a BackDoor Trojan.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I will try my best to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

-----------------------------------------

Please find this file and upload to VirusTotal for a free scan, let me know the results (just copy back the url)

http://www.virustotal.com/

C:\Users\HP_USER\Local Settings\Temp\mslaaicx.com

--------------------------

Run RogueKiller again and click Scan

When the scan completes > click on the Registry tab

Put a check next to all of these and uncheck the rest: (if found)

[HJ INPROC][ZeroAccess] HKCR\[...]\InprocServer32 : (C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-3491796085-4277623546-995273824-1000\$351d69efa3bcff67b2c05c60e3009b00\n.) -> FOUND

Now click Delete on the right hand column under Options

-------------

Next click on the Files tab and put a check next to these and uncheck the rest. (if found)

Next.............

Please create a new system restore point before running Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit if you can.

MBAR tutorial

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Note:

If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

Internet access

Windows Update

Windows Firewall

If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.

Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

Sounds good. It sounds also like a lot of people are being infected with this this winter.

I did a scan last week and it came up clean, so this rootkit $#!+ has only been on my computer for a few days, max.

Secondly, I don't do any online banking, credit card purchasing, etc. on this computer. There are some sensitive files info-wise

when it comes to documents. However, all online stuff is not sensitive. Also, I always physically disconnect the computer to the modem

when not being used, even with two firewalls.

I'll go ahead with your help. I understand that we might not get absolutely everything out but we'll try. If I have problems again I'll just

do another backup of data and do a system recovery. Vista has a recovery partition if I remember right, instead of having to do the CD

method.

Thanks much. I will follow the directions in your previous message and get back to you soon.

Hi MrC,

After almost 4 hours of scanning the Malwarebytes anti-RootKit program also found a Trojan.Siredef.C and its associated Hijack.Trojan.Siredef.C file.

Who knows how long that #$%^ has been there.

It deleted them no problem. I am going to run the anti-RootKit program again like you suggested.

Here's the first-run anti-RootKit log (mbarlog) (first) and the system log (second):

All clean according to a second anti-RootKit scan and a followthrough full regular Malwarebytes scan.

My guess is that the second bug, the Siredef.C (any info on that one? also a backdoor? must be)

came after the initial backdoor bug set we got rid of. Info online says that the first infection can summon others.

How did my computer get infected with this? I don't open weird or unknown attachments. I don't visit many sites and

usually nothing funky full of adware. In fact I have most ad/adware sites blocked. I have two firewalls. I have been told that many

anti virus programs don't screen computers as well as users think they do. Is this more about surfing and visiting compromised

websites? or does this kind of stuff download to your computer just by being connected to the web even if a browser isn't open

or even if surfing isn't happening but the browser is open? Any information on this from you would be much appreciated. I know

others visiting the forum are interested in this question. Is this about websites or just being connected no matter what?

I have changed all passwords to every site I visit. Again, I don't do any online banking or shopping with this computer. And, I have moved

any semi-sensitive files (fam. hist. / geneal. / genet., etc. work for others) off this computer and will only do that work on another.

Seems some of this stuff hides out in the Recycle Bin? Is there a way to prevent this? If somebody renamed the recycling (and not just the

desktop icons, etc.) would the bugs be thwarted on where to hide?

It's amazing to me that Windows doesn't keep logs of increases or decreases of registry items, dlls, exes, and other entities in all of the files.

It could tell the user "today 15 items were added to the pictures folder [which is normal; the user did it], and 20 new items were added to

AppData, 17 to blah blah [which you could figure out is normal for the things done that day] and 3 to blah blah from an unknown source" or

something along those lines. The OS should be able to continually say "what's here, out of what's here what's normal/needed? and out of what's

here what's newest? and if it's new is it normal looking?" This is more simple than detecting virus/trojan signatures; it's merely record keeping.

Like when people took a tally of who was on the plane in the first season of LOST. It doesn't identify who is dangerous or not, it just says "these

45 people were on the plane and this 1 person was NOT."

Final question: out of everything I downloaded in this process, 1) what should I keep for further use if needed, 2) what should I delete in case

it causes system instability down the road, and 3) if I keep it what's the best place to 'store' it. Its own program file or existing only on desktop?

I could be wrong but it seems some of this stuff doesn't merely have a desktop icon but resides someplace else but is literally on the desktop.

Thank you very much for your help MrC,

M&M

I'll answer all the questions when I get time.

Next............

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

Hi MrC,

Here's the combofix log below.

The scan took no time, just a few minutes, but it got

'stuck' trying to fix wshtcpip.dll.

I walked away for a half hour. It restarted my computer; walked in on that. Is that normal? it doesn't mention that

in the bleepingcomputer how-to-use pages.

Giving you details in case you can use them, not to overwhelm you with info or barf

insecurity/ignorance lol.

Thanks much, M&M

Looks OK...next>>>

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :

· Adwares (software ads)

· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)

· Toolbars

· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion methode. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

  1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  2. Now click on the Search tab.
  3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Please look over what was found, we're going to delete it all in the next step....if there's something you may want to keep...please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

A couple of items found....lets clear it out.....

  1. Please re-run AdwCleaner
  2. Click on Delete button.
  3. Confirm each time with OK if asked.
  4. Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.

Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Then............

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!

Yes but you never uninstalled the old versions!!!

Java 7 Update 11 <---OK

Uninstall these from add/remove programs:

Java™ 6 Update 26

Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Java™ 6 Update 7

Adobe Flash Player 11.5.502.146 <---OK

Adobe Reader 8 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---uninstall

Adobe Reader 10.1.4 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---check for update (this one may be OK, but please check)

Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 Firefox out of Date! <---check for update

You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them

Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do....
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
cf2.jpg
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
---------------------------------
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.
-------------------------------
Any questions...please post back.
If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.
Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.
Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
