Sirefef and Rootkit infection

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I normally use Chrome, but yersterday, I tried out Opera and caught some bugs.

Avast noticed it right away, and removed the following file:

C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-4157484738-3256727071-359681733-1000\$caff31a385b587ac1770c647cd362c85\n [L] Win32:Sirefef-PL [Rtk] (0)

File was successfully moved to chest...

Avast also blocked another file from opening a suspicious website:

Network Shield: blocked access to malicious site http://forever-counters.com/5699145-24B8EBEDAA47374020E664A2406FB684/counter.img?theme=1&digits=10&siteId=31250957 [ C:\Users\Piriya Suphaphiphat\wgsdgsdgdsgsd.exe ( 7336 ) ]

Strangely, however, Avast didn't recognize the .exe file itself as being a threat, so I had to kill the process via Task Manager and delete the file manually.

I then downloaded and ran MBAM to see if there were any other threats.

MBAM quick scan removed one file:

C:\Users\Piriya Suphaphiphat\AppData\Local\Temp\msimg32.dll (RootKit.0Access) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

MBAM full scan removed another file:

C:\Users\Piriya Suphaphiphat\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\0\72f480-7abc488c (RootKit.0Access) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

The latest MBAM scans have turned up nothing since then.

I was wondering if there is a way to find out when the 2 files previously quarantined by MBAM were created or last modified (without restoring them). I would like to know if these files came in with the recent infection, or if they have been lurking in my system for a while.

My DDS logs are attached.

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide. I really appreciate all the work that you do on this forum.

Best regards.

Welcome to the forum.

Please read the following information first.

You're infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess, a BackDoor Trojan.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I will try my best to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

-----------------------------------------

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Note:

If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

Internet access

Windows Update

Windows Firewall

If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.

Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

Hi MrC,

Thanks for helping me with this issue.

When I ran MBAR, I got the following notice:

Registry value "AppInit_Dlls" has been found, which may be caused by rootkit activity"

I was prompted to select "Yes" or "No" to remove this value and restart the tool -- I selected "No" based on the note that said to press "No" button if you're not sure.

The scan revealed 6 malware items that were cleaned up. I was not prompted to reboot, but the MBAR log says that the items would be deleted on reboot. So I just wanted to check with you if I should reboot now, or proceed with a second scan.

Here are the logs:

Hi Mr C,

I ran a 2nd MBAR scan after rebooting. It found and removed the same malware in the Registry Key as the 1st scan (at least, same name but in uppercase instead of lowercase characters). But the other infected files and folders now appear to be gone.

Anyway, I didn't see this Registry malware item in the removal queue of the 2nd MBAR scan, although the other infected files and folders from the 1st scan were listed. Not sure if that amounts to anything.

So I proceeded to reboot the computer to run a 3rd MBAR scan. Upon reboot, a command prompt box appeared for several seconds after I signed in to Windows -- but it eventually disappeared and the desktop came on (this was the first abnormal thing that I've noticed since getting the infection). The 3rd MBAR scan came back clean, but I suspect there may still be hidden threats (each subsequent MBAR scan is taking longer than the previous one).

Here are the logs for the 2nd scan (I'll attach the logs of the 3rd scan in the next post to clearly separate them):

Hi MrC,

As I mentioned above, the 3rd MBAR scan came back clean (although it took considerably longer than the 2nd scan). Also, the log didn't seem to have a removal queue notice like for the 2nd MBAR scan.

Please let me know what I should do next to see if there are still remnants of the infection left in my system.

Here are the logs:

Please read the directions carefully so you don't end up deleting something that is good!!

Please note that TDSSKiller can be run in safe mode if needed.

Here's a video that explains how to run it if needed:

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
    image000q.png
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
    2012081514h0118.png
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
    clip.jpg
  • Click the Start Scan button.
    19695967.jpg
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    67776163.jpg
    Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    62117367.jpg
    Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. There may be 3 logs > so post or attach all of them.
  • Sometimes these logs can be very large, in that case please attach it or zip it up and attach it.

Here's a summary of what to do if you would like to print it out:

If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue

If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose

Skip and click on Continue

Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.

If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.

Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

Hi MrC,

Sorry for the slow response -- I had to leave the house for a few hours. Anyway, TDSSKiller found 4 suspicious items of the UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic type.

2 logs were generated. Here is the first one -- I'll post the second one separately because it was too long.

That scan was clean......

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

Hi MrC,

Sorry for the late response -- I was out all day and just got back home.

When I turned on my computer, I noticed that the desktop loaded more slowly than usual. And there was an extra TDSKiller log (see below).

I'm not sure if this matters, but I previously ran TDSKiller before posting my issue in this forum, although I skipped the "loaded modules" step. I hope my previous TDSKiller scans didn't impact the TDSKiller scan that you instructed me to do.

Anyway, I have also completed the ComboFix Scan -- I'll post the results in the next reply.

At any time did TDSSKiller find anything??

----------------------------------

Please Update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, post the report.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

------------------------------------

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :

· Adwares (software ads)

· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)

· Toolbars

· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion methode. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

  1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  2. Now click on the Search tab.
  3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Please look over what was found, we're going to delete it all in the next step....if there's something you may want to keep...please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

Hi MrC,

TDSKiller never found anything, except for those 4 UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic items. Sorry I neglected to mention that earlier. TDSKiller didn't find the 6 infected items that MBAR later found and removed upon your instructions.

The MBAM scan is still coming back clean (see below).

I'll run AdwCleaner later today. I trust your judgement and I have no qualms about deleting any program that you think shouldn't be on my computer.

Thanks!

No, it's clean which is Great!

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!

Hi MrC,

Here is the Security Check log. I have Windows Defender enabled as well, but I'm not sure why it doesn't show up in the log. Also, I'm not sure why there seems to be 2 versions of Google Chrome on my system (I looked into my AppData folder and saw chrome.exe as well as old_chrome.exe).

Thanks!

OK, you don't want two anti-virus programs running at the same time, they only conflict with each other:

AV: avast! Antivirus *Disabled/Updated* {2B2D1395-420B-D5C9-657E-930FE358FC3C}

SP: avast! Antivirus *Disabled/Updated* {904CF271-6431-DA47-5FCE-A87D98DFB681}

SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/Updated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}

So keep Defender disabled:

Windows 7 x64 (UAC is enabled)

Out of date service pack!! <---please check windows updates on this.

.You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them

Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do....
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
cf2.jpg
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
---------------------------------
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.
-------------------------------
Any questions...please post back.
If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.
Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.
Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
