This specified service does not exist as an installed service virus?

My mom recently came across a number of issues on her laptop that lead me to believe she has a virus but I am not certain

Running Windows vista SP1

3GB of RAM 32 bit OS

Dell Inspiron 1525

On Java 7 update 9

The wifi does not work, I cannot access many Windows service menus as an error appears "This specified service does not exist as an installed service"

Can someone help triage this for me? Let me know what else you need me to provide.

Many thanks

Can you run the following and post the log?

download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:

  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender

  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Lots of issues and missing registry entries, also the system has not been updated to ServicePack 2 (SP2) The best option may actually be to re-install the OS. If you are not prepared to do that, try a manual update to SP2 and then run FSS one more time and post the new log.

Sp2 will have to be d/l on a spare system. Have a read here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-vista/Learn-how-to-install-Windows-Vista-Service-Pack-2-SP2

Ok I may have hit a road block. I downloaded the SP2 for vista .exe on a separate computer. I got it onto the bad computer and ran the .exe file in safe mode. After about 10 minutes and a restart (not into safe mode) a message came up that the SP2 install failed and that I should run the System Readiness tool. I got the readiness tool .exe file onto the computer. It would not run in Safe mode and in regular mode I got the "this specified service does not exist as an installed service" error again.

Is my only option at this point to wipe it clean and reinstall everything?
