Some Questions About Malwarebytes anti-malware free

Recommended Posts

I hope this is the right spot to post this. Before I download malwarebytes anti-malware free version, I have a few questions:

Is malwarebytes going to cause problems or anything, this is my moms computer so i dont want her complaining that i downloaded something annoying or saying "your too obsessed with computer viruses blah blah avast is enough blah blah get your own computer blah blah" (she's not really exactly like that)

I am using avast antivirus free, do I need to turn off the realtime shields before downloading or do something to stop a conflict?

Does malwarebytes do more then just get rid of malware? What i mean is will it track me or spy on me or have pop up's or something like that?

Is there a specific reason why you "Dont go into detail with your product" because to protect it from being hacked/controlled by viruses or because it does something that shouldnt be told to its users....?

Finally, is it a good program?

Thankyou for your time.

hello and welcome to the forum.

I will try to answer your questions, any that I can't someone else will.

I will start with your anti virus, You shouldn't have a problem with MBAM free and avast, the free version doesn't have any active protection, it only runs when you tell it too. That being said you can turn the trial on, if you do follow directions in this link http://forums.malwar...98 to set up exclusions between avast and MBAM (this only needs to be done for the trial or pro version).

as far as I'm aware malwarebytes does not track what your doing, and the only pop ups you would see would be if the protection module was active(and that only for pro or trial), the only things the pop up would tell you is that the database has been updated, that it stopped a malicious program from running, or that it blocked an IP address,

if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Fivealive.

We strive to make our software as compatible with other security software (including antivirus software) as possible with both the Free and PRO versions. You shouldn't have any conflicts at all with Avast! Antivirus.

We don't have any annoying pop-ups, ads, tracking, spyware, toolbars or anything else. That would be very much against what we as a company believe in. The entire purpose of our Free version is not to generate income by bundling adware or spyware or anything else. It is simply to offer a free tool for home users to detect and remove malware without any limitations (we never charge for removing threats or for database updates). As for money, our belief is that if we offer a good free product that does a good job at eliminating infections, that some users will appreciate that and will want to be proactive about preventing their systems from getting infected again in the future and will choose to purchase the PRO version of our software which offers features such as realtime protection against threats using our Filesystem Protection, protection from malicious webpages and IP's using our Website Protection, and automated updates and scans using our Scheduler in addition to other paid features such as a more extensive set of command line functions.

We go into plenty of detail about our products, but there are certain areas where we don't share information, such as the internals of our detection and removal engine and our database and that's for the exact reasons you stated. We don't want the bad guys figuring out how our software works because that might allow them to find ways to create infections which could avoid being detected as threats by our software.

Additionally, you don't have to take our word for it. There are many reputable websites around the web which will offer you information and opinions of our company and our software including WildersSecurity.com and BleepingComputer.com as well as general discussion pages like Yahoo Answers. You can also check out our own Facebook and Twitter pages (links to those are in my signature below) to see what other users are saying about us and our software.

If you have any questions about using our software you may consult our knowledgebase located here, post here on our forums, or contact our Customer Support team here.

Is download.cnet (The link to the download on your website) safe to download it from???

Until exile360 & fivealive return, yes, cnet is one of the official mirror sites. :)

There are others, too: Where can I download the latest version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?

As for installing on a computer that might already be infected...

Yes, that can sometimes be a problem, because the malware blocks MBAM from installing or running properly.

The program does include several tools to overcome this & there are helpful instructions here: Use Malwarebytes Chameleon to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on an already infected system

However, if you think you might be infected, and if you'd like expert assistance with installing MBAM on the infected system, please start with the options explained in this sticky topic: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers

Yes, that is generally suggested as a precaution, so that one's AV/firewall won't block the installation.

Please be sure to re-enable them after the MBAM installation.

Some users find it helpful to set exclusions between MBAM and their AV; that's explained in detail for some of the popular AVs here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138

However, if you are only using MBAM Free, that ought not to be necessary.

Thanks,

Hello and :welcome:

If the file you downloaded from cnet is called Mbam-setup-1.70.0.1100.exe then you have downloaded the right one.

As for disabling the antivirus and firewall, that is a suggestion to avoid any issues during the install. I have installed Malwarebytes many times without disabling either one and I have not had any issues. You should be fine. If for some reason you do have an issue come back and we will help you through it.

We strive to make sure you are happy with the product.

I installed it and did a quick scan, it found something and removed it (nothing too serious i think...) and I restart it and did another quick scan. Everything seems fine.

Thankyou all for answering my questions.

I just have one more, should I only do quick scans and do full scans like once a week or something or always do full scans because it says a quick scan is reccomended in most cases. Oh and how long will the full scan take? The quick scan took only around 13 minutes for me.

Great I am glad you got it installed and working great.

All that is really needed is quick scans. Remember, if you are going to stay with the free version, to perform updates before you run your quick scans.

Scan times can vary depending on your computer and how much data you have on it.

Your quite welcome, we are glad to be of service.

Yes you can continue to use your computer while the scans are happening, but you may notice your computer my run a little slower while the scan is in progress.

This is where having the PRO version comes in handy cause you can schedule scans to happen when your away from your computer so it does not interfer with the work you are doing.
