Malwarebytes Logo is grey and can't enable website blocking

Recommended Posts

I'm running Windows XP SP3, logged in as an administrator level account. I just upgraded to MalwareBytes version 1.70.0.1100 with the blue round M logo. My previous version had the red square with the white M in it. I believe I might have had this problem before the upgrade.

Just checking. This is the paid version correct?

Please run the following scans for us so that we can check and see what might be going on.

Create an mbam-check log:

  • Download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double-click on mbam-check.exe to run it, it should then open a log file
  • Please DO NOT copy and paste the entire contents of the log into your next post, please attach the log CheckResults.txt file which should now be located on your desktop to your next post instead

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

This is probably the issue.

Compatibility Flag Settings (Any MBAM file listings should be removed):

=======================================================================

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\appCompatFlags\Layers

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

Please reset your file and folder options so that hidden files and folders are shown.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.

* Double-click on the My Computer icon.

* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

* After the new window appears select the View tab.

* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.

* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.

* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.

* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.

* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.

* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Then browse to this location C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and locate the file svchost.exe

Then right click and choose Properties and undo/remove any compatibility settings on the file.

Then restart the computer and see if that corrects the issue for you or not and let me know.

Thanks

Then please go into the Registry (if you're comfortable doing so) and remove the entry in the Registry and reboot the computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\appCompatFlags\Layers

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

If you're not comfortable doing so let me know and we can do something else.

Okay well it may require some deeper scanning to see what's going on. Please go ahead and open a ticket on the Help Desk and someone will assist you with this further.

If you like you can ask for me and reference this post.

Thank you
