Keyboard not working

I have a Gateway LT10 Netbook and after a PUM virus was found and removed the keyboard stopped working properly. It seems only to work in partial shortcut mode. I have tried to restet it thru the control panel using BOTH Accessibility Options and Keyboard. I have held down both shift buttons for 5-10 sec to reset it, NOPE. I have done the 5x on the enter to reset, NOPE. I have even gone so far as to try ALL suggestions back to back and, as you can guess; NOPE. I have even tried to roll back driver and; at one point in time it was working; until it went to sleep then after I woke it up; guess what; it was back to being screwed up. AARRRGH! I can't figure this out! I'm going to look like Kojak in a couple of days if I can't get this straightened out. If someone could help me out either before 4p today or before 4p tomorrow while I'm here at the shop it would be HIGHLY appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes

Being that the computer was infected, it may be best to have an expert help you get it fixed. Please pick one of the options below to get started.

If you think you are infected, here are the steps needed to get your computer cleaned....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make recovery difficult

You have 3 Options that you can choose from as listed below:

  • Option 1 —— Free Expert advice in the Malware Removal Forum
  • Option 2 —— Paying customer -- Contact Support via email
  • Option 3 —— Premium, Fee-Based Support

OPTION 1

As we don't deal with malware removal in the
General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum
, you need to start a topic in the

Malware Removal forum
so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems or infections you may have.
  • Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Follow this topic and choose Instantly,
so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.

NOTE: Please do not post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies.

If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
      Or
    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

OPTION 2

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk

OPTION 3

If you would like to use our
Malwarebytes Premium Consumer Services
partner, Comprehensive solutions to all your computer support needs—from installation and set-up to troubleshooting and tune-ups go to our
support site.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as possible.

The laptop is up and running and I'm not asking for help deleting or help config'ing the netbook. I'm asking what I need to do to get the keyboard out of shortcut mode. As explained above, I have done a step by step in the control panel and none of that has worked. How can I get out of shortcut mode? It was operational until it went into screensaver but once it came out of that mode, it was back to shortcut mode.

There is no such thing as a "PUM virus".

Too many computer issues are attributed to computer "viruses". While computer viruses do exist, true computer viruses are a very small niche of computer malware and the overarching concept of malicious software is "malware" and not viruses.

That being stated, PUM stands for Potentially Unwanted Modification so it isn't even any kind of malware but may be the symptom of or the result of malicious software activity. Often such a OS modification can be created by non-malicious software or processes.

If this is a notebook, or sub-notebook, the first thing to do is try an external USB Keyboard and see if that works properly.

Another is to look at what was that ACTUAL modification and what was done to mitigate it.

Another option is to restore the system to a previous Restore Point that was created before this unknown PUM was dealt with.
