Blue Screen Of Death

Recommended Posts

Hello.

When I run Malwarebytes full scan, I get a blue screen about an hour in. This has happened twice now. Can't read screen, it disappears too fast and the computer restarts in normal mode.

It's something to do with Kernel and Snap-in (I think - that's all I got before restart)

Quick scan works fine.

I also have MSE and Kaspersky. Do they need to be disabled before running full scan with Malwarebytes?

Hi, MaryJane:

BSOD are usually due to hardware or driver issues.

I am just a home user, but the first thing that jumps out at me from your post is that you are running 2 AVs (MSE and Kaspersky).

As a long-time KIS user myself, I'm actually surprised you've been able to run it with MSE at all!

No AV, especially KAV or KIS, will perform properly with another AV installed (even if the 2nd AV is not running in real time).

Having more than 1 installed AV actually makes your computer LESS secure, not more secure, AND it can lead to all sorts of system instability/crashes/freezes because of conflicts.

That could be contributing to your BSOD.

One should never have more than 1 realtime AV and 1 realtime anti-malware.

The other thing is that it is neither necessary nor recommended to run routine MBAM Full scans.

Quick scans are all that are needed, except in unusual circumstances.

Unless the machine is heavily infected, it ought not to be necessary to disable KIS/KAV protection to run an MBAM scan.

So, until an MBAM staffer comes along, the first thing I would suggest would be to completely uninstall either MSE or KIS/KAV (using the removal tool http://support.kaspersky.com/1464), and then rebooting.

Please post back and let us know if that resolves your issue.

When you do, please post back with the 2 DDS logs attached to your next reply (instructions below) -- they will provide the MBAM staff with a bit more info to help to determine if there might be other issues with your system (e.g. infection).

Thanks!

DDS Instructions

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once it is downloaded, you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please attach both of the following logs to your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.
