Unauthorised Remote Access

I was contacted by user to say their system was being remotely controlled. After establishing this hadn't been requested or authorised I had them shut the machine down before starting analysis. Both the user and a colleague confirmed this wasn't haywire actions that could be the result of a faulty mouse/keyboard. Folders, files and programs were being opened, viewed and shut down in a controlled manner. I assumed an infection had given somebody access so clean booted and ran a series of scans. MBAM - Full system scan, BitDefender - Deep scan and ESET - Online scan all agreed with the resident Avira software - no infections present.

The machine OS was fully updated, the Avira antivirus was uptodate. I'm not happy writing this off as 'user imagination' as the two people involved are pretty level-headed and are adamant that the machine was being controlled. Anybody got any ideas?
