Laptop W/ xp professional sp3 x 64bit. System starts slow, runs slow, freezes frequently, scr saver stopped working,

I have run multiple scans w/ MBAM, Avast AV, TDSkiller, Norton Power eraser, MBAR Beta, nothing found. Cant support 2 monitors. Second monitor lags. I'm out of leads. Is it time to reinstal OS? Please advise.

Well having XP Pro x64 is pretty rare.

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.


    When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
    You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

STEP 1

Please uninstall all versions of Java.

STEP 2

Please run a FULL disk check on your hard drive.

You can visit the following website for detailed information on how to do that on your version of Windows

Please make sure you check both boxes and have it scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

How to run in Windows XP

STEP 3

Temporarily fully remove your Avast antivirus

(Note: Before uninstalling avast you need to disable its self defense feature: Right click avast! tray icon > avast! shields control > Disable permanently)

STEP 4

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
      You can also look up your ID and Key from the Registry and copy and paste it to a Notepad document before running the mbam-clean utility.

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

      Location for Windows x64

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

      If you cannot locate your registration in the Registry and no longer have access to your order number you can contact Cleverbridge to obtain information about your order and registration information.

STEP 5

Please Run TFC by OldTimer to clear temporary files:

  • Download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.
  • http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
  • Close any open programs and Internet browsers.
  • Double click TFC.exe to run it on XP
    and once it opens click on the Start button on the lower left of the program to allow it to begin cleaning.
  • Please be patient as clearing out temp files may take a while.
  • Once it completes you may be prompted to restart your computer, please do so.
  • Once it's finished you may delete TFC.exe from your desktop or save it for later use for the cleaning of temporary files.

STEP 6

Open Internet Explorer go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and click on the Reset button.

Quit Internet Explorer

STEP 7

Defrag the hard drive

STEP 8

Download and install Malwarebytes again and update it and activate it.

STEP 9

Download and install your avast antivirus
