Installed Malwarebytes without turning off firewall

Recommended Posts

Hi

I installed Malwarebytes on my PC and all seems to be working OK.

I already have McAfee on the PC, when I was downloading Malwarebytes I got the instruction to turn off my firewall. I thought I had done it but I realised I had only turned off Mcafee realtime scanning and left the McAfee firewall on.

Will this compromise the Malwarebytes from working properly?

Also when scanning with Malwarebytes should I disable any McAfee programme thats running (Firewall, realtime scanning etc) ?

Thanks

No, you should be fine.

The only reason it's suggested to disable your AV/firewall when installing MBAM is so that they don't mistakenly block or interfere with the install.

Having your firewall enabled shouldn't be an issue.

If MBAM downloaded OK, installed OK, is updating OK and is scanning OK, you should be fine.

Also when scanning with Malwarebytes should I disable any McAfee programme thats running (Firewall, realtime scanning etc) ?

No, you shouldn't need to disable your AV and wouldn't want to disable your firewall.

Sometimes, on a heavily infected machine, pausing one's AV protection while scanning with MBAM can prevent MBAM from freezing.

But, in general, it shouldn't be needed.

As long as you are not seeing any performance problems, you should be fine with McAfee and MBAM both running in real-time.

(I used to run MBAM PRO and McAfee on my systems, but haven't personally done so since 2010.)

Each computer is different.

Some folks find that their performance is improved/conflicts avoided by setting mutual exclusions between the AV and MBAM.

Some general steps to do that are listed below.

Please post back and let us know if you need further help.

---------------------

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (I'm not sure what version of McAfee AV and what version of Windows you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware \ mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Hi daledoc1 and AdvancedSetup.

thanks for the warm welcome and your replies.

Everything does seem to be working fine.

I run Windows 7 and McAfee Total Protection (That uses McAfee firewall. Windows firewall is disabled) , The version of Malwarebytes is the Free Version so no realtime protection from that.

Even though Ive had a PC since 1989 Im still pretty green around the machine. If I need to disable anything could you please be as kind to guide me through it.

Appreciate the help

Hi,

If you are only running MBAM Free (on-demand), then you ought not to have any conflicts and there's nothing to disable.

Your realtime AV and firewall are your first line of defense.

Since you are using the Free version, please remember to manually update the MBAM database each time before you scan.

There are many helpful KB topics and videos covering updating and other topics in the helpdesk area of the website. :)

PS MBAM Free only works to detect/remove malware that has already gotten onto your computer, past your AV. MBAM PRO offers robust, layered, realtime protection alongside your AV and helps to protect your computer from becoming infected. It also offers incremental database updates, scheduled updates/scans and other enhancements. As another home user -- unaffiliated with the company -- with 2 licenses, I can honestly say that the lifetime consumer license is a GREAT deal for such excellent protection.
