windows 7 update problem

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am facing a problem with my new laptop. I have windows 7 os.

It says that I have to restart so that the updates can be installed, before it shuts down ( at 15% precisely ) it says:

"Configuration Update Failure"

then it says:

"Reverting Changes"

it shuts down, starts booting again, and again tries to install and the same thing happens again, except that after "Reverting Changes" it doesn't restart again, I continue to log on normally. and of course, the updates are not installed.

what should I do about this problem? thanks on advance for your help.

Hi, winamate: :)

Sorry you're having trouble with Windows Update.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell exactly what's going on without additional information (e.g.specifically which update(s) failed, what was the error code, etc).

There can be many different reasons, and many different solutions, depending on the specifics.

Until one of our forum MS Update experts or other geeks arrives, you might find these links at sevenforums.com helpful:

Hello winamate,

If your issues are not resolved, do the following things.

1

Let's have you use NOTEPAD & do some research in the Windows Update log (using Notepad)

usually at C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log or C:\WINNT\Windowsupdate.log

Copy and Paste here the last 60 lines out of that log, for review.

Go to near end of the log for latest entries and look for error notations.

You can use CTRL+END keyboard keys to get to the end of the file. Then get the last 60 lines & copy & paste here, in reply here.

See Microsoft KnowledgeBase article

KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

2

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com here

or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr or

http://www.infospyware.net/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.

Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

DDS will run in a command prompt window and will take 3 to 4 minutes or so.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please Copy & Paste contents of the following logs in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt

3

Start >> type in cmd and [Enter-key] to get a command-prompt window

type in

net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

N.B. That will temporarily stop the windows update automatic service. On your next Windows restart, it will be on again.

Go to Windows Explorer.

Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.

Modify following as appropriate.

If your Windows folder is C:\Windows.

Look at this folder

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download <<<--- this folder

Delete all the contents of the Download folder.

Next,

Download this zip file from here http://sdrv.ms/Kp1lc3 so we can get a report.

Save the zip file to a unique folder.

Extract the contents. Then double-click the vbs file to start it.

You will get a Notepad report named UpdateHistory.txt located in your %temp% (temporary file folder).

The topmost entries (at the top of the file) are the most recent update items.

Copy the pages and then paste into your reply here.
