Very slow startup?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My son's laptop takes a terribly long time to boot. Neither Avast nor Malwarebytes show any infected items. I wonder whether it is all the startup tasks, looking for software updates. Since I'm clueless I'm concerned about using HijackThis to simply delete some of these items without getting expert advise first. Or it could be related to the controller error, for which this is the wrong forum...

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

Please remove any usb or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!

Please download and run RogueKiller to your desktop.

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.

For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.

When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

Not much showing, but lets do this>>>>>>>>>>>>

Run RogueKiller again and click Scan

When the scan completes > click on the Registry tab

Put a check next to all of these and uncheck the rest: (if found)

[TASK][sUSP PATH] {93C6A924-92ED-499C-A286-A179B96D821E} : "c:\users\susan\appdata\local\google\chrome\application\chrome.exe" hxxp://ui.skype.com/ui/0/5.10.0.116/en/abandoninstall?page=tsMain -> FOUND

Now click Delete on the right hand column under Options

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then.............
Please create a new system restore point before running Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit.
MBAR tutorial
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt
Thanks MrC. I did as you suggested and the anti-rootkit tool found nothing on the first scan. Logs attached. Could the slowness simply be the background processes trying to check for updates?
Yes it could, but we have to eliminate any malware first.
If you would like to continue, we have a couple of more scans to run.
Please download and run ComboFix.
The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix
http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix
Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.
Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.
Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
---------->NOTE<----------
If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.
Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.
  1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  2. Now click on the Search tab.
  3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.
Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.
Lots of adware found....lets clear it out.....
  1. Please re-run AdwCleaner
  2. Click on Delete button.
  3. Confirm each time with OK if asked.
  4. Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt as well - n is the order number.
Please do this:
Check to make sure the hard drive is running in the correct mode > DMA
http://www.thewindowsplanet.com/695/how-to-enabledisable-direct-memory-access-dma-in-windows-7.htm
Next..................
Download HiJackThis to a folder:
http://www.trendmicr.../HijackThis.exe
Run HJT.exe
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Save the log to a convenient location.
Copy and paste it into your post.
Couldn't check if DMA mode is used because there was nothing listed with "Channel" under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Only one item: AMD SATA Controller. And nothing under properties for that item showed anything like that.
OK, you really don't have a lot of programs running at startup but these aren't really necessary:
First please create a new folder on your desktop and drag HijackThis.exe into it so backups can be made and restored if necessary.
C:\Users\susan\Desktop\HijackThis.exe <----No Good
C:\Users\susan\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe <---should be in a folder
-------------------------------------------------
[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Default Manager] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Default Manager\DefMgr.exe" -resume
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 3.3.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\quickstart.exe
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
--------------------------------
You can always restore these if you feel they are needed by running HJT and choose Main Menu > View a list of backups.
Let me know how the computer is now, MrC
