Barb's Handy Hijack This Log

Hi there, and thanks in advance for any help you can offer. My machine started running very slowly pretty suddenly the other day, right after I got what appeared to be a malware popup ad (which I promptly closed). Here's my log -- if anybody can point a finger at something evil, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi Barb,

Can you please run the following.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

[*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

[*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

[*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer

AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile

The post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs in that order please.

Then run this.

Download
DDS
and save it to your desktop

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click
dds.scr
to run the tool.

When done, the
DDS.txt
will open.

Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply:
    DDS.txt
    and

Hi There, and thanks for your help. I ran everything, and the dds logs are attached. I had actually run the malware bytes quick scan before posting to this forum, and it didn't come up with anything except a registry entry for HijackThis.StartMenu (I think that's what it was) -- googled that and thought it should go in the ignore list, so I added it to the ignore, ran the quick scan again, and it didn't find anything. Let me know if you want to see that log as well, or just the dds. Thanks! Barb

Nothing obvious found. Looks okay but you have some old Java software that needs to be removed and updated as it has exploited code.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

Thanks for your help. So, would you say that I probably don't have a malware problem, and that if I'm still having problems (intermittently) that it's just something wrong with my regular software? i'm still thinking that maybe I just need to reformat.

Thanks again!

Barb

Well, my machine seems to have intermittent freeze-ups where the cpu is maxing out even though there isn't much running. I also can't play mp3s (streaming or straight from my hardrive) or video without it getting broken up (you know, like a skipping cd). Sometimes just opening up IE or Firefox takes a minute or two for no apparent reason. I haven't reformatted before, but I don't have much software running, so I was thinking it might be a relatively painless process, or at least an edifying experience :-)

Well a reformat is a bit drastic for most users. Nothing wrong with it as long as you know what you're doing and have all your data backed up.

I rebuild my boxes quite often so not a big deal to me except time.

What type of issues are you having?

Well I'll post this for you and then close this post since it's for working on Malware removal and not general PC Support. You can open a new post in the PC Help forum and they can work on helping you with this further if you like.

Computer and browser slowness are not always malware related

Poor performance and other problems can be the result of disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

Listed below are a few things you can do to improve speed and system performance. Many of the these suggestions will apply if you're using Windows Vista but may be done a bit differently. Near the bottom of this thread there is a section specifically devoted to Vista Users.

For browser problems, see:

If your having connectivity issues or errors such as Page cannot be displayed see

If you're using Vista or Internet Explorer 7, see

If you have a lot of toolbars and add-ons attached to Internet Explorer, you could try improving performance by disabling those which are unecessary. See:
