Google Search Redirect Virus

BigKev

Recommended Posts

My computer was infected with the S.M.A.R.T virus. I ran Malwarebytes and PC Doctor and it seems to have removed the S.M.A.R.T. virus. I was able to unhide all my files and desktop, but my browser runs very slow and when I click on any Google or Yahoo search result I get re-directed to random web pages.

Here is dds.txt:

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

[*]Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.

    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

[*]Please read every post completely before doing anything.

    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.

[*]Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.

    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Greetings

I have not heard from you in a couple of days so I am coming by to check on you to see if you are having problems or you just need some more time.

Also to remind you that it is very important that we finish the process completely so as to not get reinfected. I will let you know when we are complete and I will ask to remove our tools

As far as the computer goes, it starts up normally and everything seems to run fine. IE opens normally, but as soon as I start to navigate anywhere, it runs very slow. It take about 30 seconds for Google to return a search query. Then, when I click on any search result it still is re-directing me to malicious sites. I close IE as soon as I see that I am being re-directed.

Other programs such as Excel open quickly, but when I attempt to open a file, it takes a long time for the "Open File" dialog box to open. From the time I click the Open File icon, the list of files doesn't open for about 30 seconds.

I'm using a different PC to post on this forum.

Thanks.

I've tried running TDSS killer twice and it doesn't run. The Windows prompt appears asking me if I want to allow TDSS to make changes to the computer, I click "Yes" and then nothing happens. Do I need to disable other anti-virus programs first? Or should I skip TDSS and move on to aswMBR?

Greetings

I need you to make a bootable usb and to make a screenshot for me - follow the instructions below to do this

How to create a bootable Puppy USB Drive

  • Download and save a copy of the latest Puppy ISO file
  • Download and save a copy of Unetbootin for Windows.
  • Insert an empty formatted USB drive into a USB port on the computer that's being used to create the bootable USB.
  • Launch Unetbootin ....
  • Ensure that Disk Image is selected.
  • Using the browse button ... browse to and select the Puppy ISO file.
  • Ensure that Type: is set to USB Drive and that the Drive: letter corresponds to the USB drive.
  • Click OK

Unetbootin will now copy the Puppy files to the USB and make it a bootable device.

Next

You need to change the boot order of the computer to boot from a USB drive ....

  • Read HERE for instructions how to do this.

Now boot into Puppylinux

when you get to the desktop Click on each of the drive items found in the bottom left corner to mount them (when mounted they will have a red cross next to them)

Next - Launch GParted which is found at Menu > System > GParted partition manager,

Click to select All Drives then click Okay

I need you to take a screenshot of the window that opens up - to do this follow these instructions

To take a screenshot in Puppy ....

With the GParted window open ...

  • Click menu > Graphic > mtPaint-snapshot screen capture
  • A small window will open ....
    • Click Capture Now
    • Click OK

[*]The mtPaint program will open ....

    • Click File > Save
    • Double click on ../
    • Double click on mnt/
    • Double click on sdb1/
    • Set File Format to JPEG
    • Enter screenshot1 into the text box
    • Click OK

This will save a file screenshot1.jpeg into the USB drive, paste or attach this to your next post

Next

  • Click menu > shutdown > power off computer
  • If prompted to save the session click on No

Puppy will now close down.

remove the usb and save it - we will use it again - boot back into windows and send me the screen capture

What am I trying to get a screenshot of? I'm sorry for asking, but I'm just not sure what you need to see and this looks like a lot of work. Also, every time I insert a thumb drive into the USB slot Windows tells me that it needs to format the disk before I can use it. I know the drive works because I can use it in other PCs just fine so I'm worried that the bootable USB drive won't work. Can you please confirm that you still want me to perform the steps above?

Thanks.

Hello

yes it may be allot of work but this is a nasty virus

Partition table:

0 - [XXXXXX] DELL-UTIL (0xde) [VISIBLE] Offset (sectors): 63 | Size: 39 Mo

1 - [XXXXXX] NTFS (0x07) [VISIBLE] Offset (sectors): 81920 | Size: 10118 Mo

2 - [XXXXXX] NTFS (0x07) [VISIBLE] Offset (sectors): 20803584 | Size: 600307 Mo

3 - [ACTIVE] NTFS (0x17) [HIDDEN!] Offset (sectors): 1250234368 | Size: 10 Mo

this hidden partition is what is causing all the trouble - we need to work on this before windows starts so we need to use GParted to remove it

you can make the usb from any computer that works

I have the computer booted with Precise Puppy. When I click on the drives all of them will allow me to mount them and they will show the red cross except for "sda4" (which I assume is the hidden partition). When I select it, I get a window that says:

"DO NOT REMOVE MOUNTED MEDIA"

Then it lists the 4 drives.

Next to 3 of them and "UNMOUNT" button

The last one reads "sda4 ntfs 10M" with a MOUNT button nexxt to it.

At the bottom of the window are: "preferences" "refresh" "quit"

What should I do next?

Separate question: How do I post the screenshot to this forum?

Thanks.

Hello

From what you said before I think we need to set the second partition (SDA2) to boot from

Open notepad. Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Paste this into the open notepad. Save it on the flash drive as fixlist.txt

TDL4: custom:26000022 <===== ATTENTION!
CMD: bootrec /FixMbr

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

On Vista or Windows 7: Now please enter System Recovery Options.

Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The tool will make a log on the flash drive (Fixlog.txt) please post it to your reply.

Next I need you to boot back into GParted and set the second partition (SDA2) to boot from

Gringo
